Excellent Book on APA Style

I have a Masters Degree in Psychology and am currently a Doctoral Candidate in Special Education, so the fact that all my papers are required to be in APA format is not a problem to me. I was required, however, to purchase this book for my next course, and I must say that it is a perfect adjunct to the APA Manual. Every so often, I will forget a piece of necessary information that might seem insignificant, but is of importance. In this book, I can easily look up the particular item that I've forgotten/blanked on momentarily, or on which I just want to refresh my understanding, and find what I want in the Table of Contents. There is, unfortunately, no index so one must find the topic in the Contents section. I am not too thrilled about that but for the fact that the Contents section is fairly detailed. What I really like about this book, however, is that it gives examples of correct and incorrect usages, and the information that is being corrected is highlighted in gray. The book gives two sets of examples on one sentence, or form; one is called the draft version which is always the incorrect form, and the other is called the feedback version which is the corrected form. This goes into everything from correct comma usage to not showing bias in writing, so there are many important subjects that are covered. There are also tests which give not only the answer key, but also the exact APA code that governs the correct answer. This is especially helpful. The only thing I find confusing is a personal matter, and that is that I teach high school students who have learning disabilities and I teach them MLA formatting. The two styles do differ, and I tend, on occasion, to make the error of using MLA when I need to use APA in my own reports. Nothing huge such as formatting the References section wrong, but the occasional difference of whether to use Italics or quotation marks--well I guess that could be a big error. This workbook will, I believe, cement the APA format firmly into my mind. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who must employ proper APA styling. BTW, I bought the spiral bound version, a bit worried about the quality of the paper and whether it would easily tear, but my fears are unfounded. The paper is of good enough quality that I don't believe this will be a problem. I do wish it came in a hard cover version, always my first choice in a book to which I may be referring in the future.

Mastering APA Style.

The book was good but not great. Amazon did a great job of delivering the material, but the book wasn't what I though it would be. I am currently in my third graduate program. I like most of the student I know would like a book that is easy to navigate and find answers in. Both the mastering style and the APA 6th edition leave a lot to be desired.

"Go governance, go early"

"Go governance, go early" remains the rallying cry of savvy enterprise and solution architects who are chartered with the setting the scope and direction of their enterprise's data integration programs -- even more so now with the cresting requirement for "big data" integration. Understanding the scope, diversity and integration challenges associated with the governance of big data is tremendously challenging.

Sunil Soares' latest book represents a Rosetta Stone for IT professionals to map their portfolio of traditional IT experiences (master data management, data governance, et al) to the newest data technology trends of "big data" and "big data analytics". Specifically, among other benefits, it provides a much appreciated reference architecture for big data as well as case studies illustrating the business outcomes from big data analytics.

Clearly, in our practice experience, big data requires both master data management (MDM) and data governance to be effective and sustainable. Through 2013-14, big data will repatriate itself into the MDM fabric as yet another source. Specifically, big data applications need to be MDM-aware and MDM must also be able to store preferences for each big data source. Moreover, big data analytics need to understand the master view of customers and products to be effective. Lastly, mining of big data to populate social MDM and to perform entity matching on big data stores will help provision a 360� view of such entities from public, subscription and enterprise big data feeds.

Big data needs to be governed according to its intended business strategies which in turn are reflected in the active data governance policies of an organization. Otherwise the economic and tactical risk is redoubled due to probable overinvestment combined with a lack of proper business strategy execution.

If your data governance program is designed the right way, you should be able to extend your data governance processes to incorporate both enterprise-managed and the greater world of big data. One of the take aways from Sunil's book is the realization that the size of the data doesn't matter as much as how you use it -- and therein we IT professionals must learn to embrace the new crop of technology solutions such as big data and the governance it mandates.

Must have for Data Governance Folks !!

I absolutely loved this book. The book is really structured around the principles that one needs to govern big data. Once author establishes the framework he gets into the best practices of each discipline in the framework. It does not talk about how to implement big data governance but I guess that should come if you have already data governance running. If you are in the data governance then this is a must read.

In the world of Big Data, data governance principles and policies are usually sacrificed in early pilots in the name of performance and time to value. As Hadoop and other Big Data technologies are put into production use and opened up to a broader audience, these systems have to be brought into compliance with standard governance policies. However, putting governance aside till then is a mistake. As with most things, forethought and prevention can save a lot of effort down the road. Regardless of whether you are just starting out with Big Data or already have a mess on your hands, this book will help you understand the specifics of governing Big Data, available tooling and best practices. and how to go about putting together data governances policies and processes. Very readable, clear and comprehensive.

He initiated the first BFA program in Architectural Illustration in the United States, and co-established the first European graduate program in Colour Studies at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Finland.

I had been searching high and low for this type of book, it is exactly what I was looking for. My son loves to draw comic strips, this book is ready to go. The book was a hit!!

Not worth it

I suppose its my fault for not reading the full description, but from the cover this looked like a book that would at least demonstrate how to draw comic characters. Especially for $9! It is filled with pre-gridded comic pages. That's it. The book itself is flimsy and the pages are thin and mediocre quality. I would expect to find something like it at the dollar store. I got this as a last minute Christmas gift for my brother that loves to draw thinking it would expand his skills. Now I'll be scrambling for an alternative.
