Galacta: The Hungry Superheroine (with daddy issues!)

personally loved it. It's typical Adam Warren: chincy, full of pop-culture references, sarcastic, funny as hell, but full of great characterization.

The use of Twitter in the story was great! I wonder if Gali really does have an active twitter acount so I can follow.

I love that Gali really does try to be a hero, and goes to confront her father and figure out what's going on with her rather than give in to her hunger. The ending was kinda weird given that Gali looks like she's about 16, but it's cool too because I'm now curious what kind of mother she'd be. And Gali got to see a side of her father people rarely see, which was neat too.

I really hope this sell well enough for Gali to at least appear in anthologies and stuff. Seriously, this was a great story, and I'd hate to see the character drop be the wayside like Livewires did.

Why Can't More Marvel Comics Be Like This?

20 years ago, I stopped collecting Marvel Comics.

Their tragic, melodramatic mutant soap opera was getting old, and honestly, I see more than enough tragedy in real life to want to turn to it for entertainment.

Today, I bought an issue of Galacta after a 20-year hiatus, because this is the most fun I've ever had with a Marvel product. Considering that my old collection of Marvel comics fills an entire closet, that's saying something.

Much of the credit goes to the legendary Adam Warren, who has created a heroine many of us can sympathize with. There are very few among us who don't have parent issues, and those who say they don't are most likely lying to us or themselves.

Galacta is also neurotically cute, but I do agree with someone who reviewed this at another forum with the opinion that it was a bit of a one-trick pony. I hope that future stories allow the heroine to grow as a character and continue to expand on her viewpoints as she lives and learns on Earth. As most of the story was an internal monologue, interaction with other characters on a more meaningful level would also be nice.

And if any Marvel executives are reading this, know that I would definitely buy a Galacta statue as long as it was a well-detailed, high-quality sculpt in the tradition of Japanese figure companies like Good Smile or Alter.

Elsevilla is the man!

Props to Hector Sevilla who's responsible for the art here. This comic is funny, witty and the art is FANTASTIC.

Hector Sevilla Lujan (aka Elsevilla) is my all time favorite artist and it makes me really happy to support his work.

You won't be disappointed by this one-shot story or it's art, the printing is impeccable and the type lacks mistakes. Printed on magazine paper, with lots of Iron Man adds.

There's a few crossovers that are awesome, for instance you'll see one of the X-Men , and a few other known members of Marvel, but I won't give it away. The ending is hilarious, also.

Reading At The Beach: Reviews

is a great book for those of us who are getting older. If you are like me, I've noticed my knees don't want to bend like they used to, I gain weight a lot easier than even just a few years ago, my eyes are getting worse and I can't eat like I used to. I need all the help I can get.

There are 6 parts to this book:

The Prime Time Plan

Every page is filled with the information you need to get fit and stay healthy. There is a list of 16 superfoods:
Seafood(salmon is the best), Berries(blueberries are the best), Spinach, Nuts, Olive Oil, Broccoli, Oatmeal, Flaxseed, Avocados, Pomegranate Juice, Tomatoes, Tofu, Yogurt, Red Onions, Garlic, Beans and Lentils. There are only 3 of these that I seldom or rarely eat/drink and those are avocados, pomegranate juice and tofu. I'll be putting the first 2 on my weekly shopping list, but tofu....I don't think so!!
In the section Put Together Your Personal Eight-Week Prime Time Plan, the authors suggest you use post-it notes to flag the sections that relate to your own health concerns so that you can easily find them again. I loved this idea! I hate trying to find something again and this makes it so easy.

Under RX For Prime Time Stress Busting there were quite a few tips and a few of them are some of my favorite sayings, "If you can't change it, don't worry about it" and "Love & Laugh To Live Longer". I truly believe these are very important to live by.

I love books like this. The give step by step instructions on how to be the person you want to be. Even doing a few of the suggestion will improve your health. Most people don't start, or stay with a fitness program because it's so overwhelming. The key, at least for me, is to do it a few steps at a time, adding more changes as I go. This is another good book to add to your fitness/health library. I know I will refer back to it often.

Healthy Lifestyle Guide

"Prime-Time" is the authors' way of saying "senior" , "retirement age" or "baby-boomer." The book is a survey of what the reader can do now, to prepare for, or to live in, those older years. They talk about cardio-vascular health, and what you can do to improve it, as well as dental health, keeping the brain sharp, reversing bone loss, vision problems, tinnitus, reducing reliance on drugs, etc. Each chapter starts with an overview of the challenges faced by the body in that area, what causes problems, and how to prevent or ameliorate those problems.

The information is based on science, and the authors quote their sources. The tone of the book is breezy, with some of the flavor of "learn the secrets of the masters" - both more engaging and more sales-y than the standard impersonal tone found in fliers from your own doctor. I found myself setting the book down after the first three chapters, to go walk the dogs around the block. Dr. Sears had convinced me so well about the advantages of exercise for increasing vascular health that I felt I needed to get up and do something sensible, instead of just sitting in my chair reading the book. Then I came back and finished the book, and fixed an evening meal full of fresh vegetables. Their words put me in action.

Their main advice for many of the different problems boils down to eat nutritious foods (not junk food) and move your body. Those are the keys, but there are, of course, more detailed recommendations for each area of health. The back of the book has some specific food recommendations, based on nutrients, and some simple exercises.

The book is quite readable, with very little jargon and lots of clear explanations with snappy analogies. The advice is sound, and presented clearly. This is not the next diet book craze -- it is advice about lifestyle to preserve health. Highly recommended.

This is a great book that covers head-to-toe, inside-and-outside of how human body changes as we age. Based on scientific evidence, his own medical practice, and his own experience as cancer survivor, Dr. Sears, in a easy to understand and sometimes humorous way, presents a wealth of information as to what to do, what to eat, and how to do it so to live a healthy, happy life in prime-time as we age.

I couldn't put this book down when I was reading it. Though I have already maintain quite a healthy diet and exercise program for may years, I find that I can fine tune my ways based on the information that Dr. Sears shares in this book.

I highly recommend this book without any reservation.

About the Author
Bradford (Brad) Hesse was appointed Chief of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch (HCIRB) in November, 2006. He served as the Acting Chief of HCIRB from 2004-2006.

Dr. Hesse's professional focus is bringing the power of health information technologies to bear on the problem of eliminating death and suffering from cancer, a cause to which he remains steadfastly dedicated. While at the NCI, he has championed several initiatives that evaluate and progress the science of cancer communication and informatics, including the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) and the Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication (CECCR).

As director of NCI's biennial Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS), Dr. Hesse is responsible for leading a team of scientists in the development and execution of this nationally representative, general population survey of American adults. HINTS, now entering its fourth iteration, systematically evaluates the public's knowledge, attitudes and behaviors relevant to cancer control in an environment of rapidly changing communication technologies.

Dr. Hesse also serves as the program director for NCI's Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research (CECCR). This initiative supports the research of four centers aimed at increasing the knowledge of, tools for, access to, and use of cancer communications by the public, patients, survivors, and health professionals. The centers have been instrumental in defining the next generation of interdisciplinary collaboration in cancer communication science.

Prior to his work at NCI, Dr. Hesse conducted research in the interdisciplinary fields of human computer interaction, health communication, medical informatics, and computer-supported decision making. In 1988, he served as a postdoctoral member of the Committee for Social Science Research on Computing at Carnegie Mellon University, and subsequently co-founded the Center for Research on Technology at the American Institutes for Research in Palo Alto, California in 1991. Working in a contract environment before coming to NCI, Dr. Hesse directed projects for the Departments of Education and Labor, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Institutes of Health. He has also provided usability services to Apple Computer, Hewlett Packard, Xerox, Microsoft, Sun, and Netscape.

Dr. Hesse currently serves on the board of advisors for the American Psychological Association's online resource, PsycINFO, and is a member of the American Psychological Society, the Association for Computing Machineries, Special Interest Group on Human Computer Interaction (SIG-CHI), the American Medical Informatics Association, the International Communication Association, and the Usability Professionals Association.

Dr. David K. Ahern is on special assignment to the National Cancer Institute under an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) whereby he will serve as a special advisor to the Health Communications and Informatics Research Branch within the Behavior Research Program. In this role he will assist the Chief and staff in developing a research agenda in health and behavioral informatics to enable enhanced care across the cancer care continuum.

Dr. Ahern focused his career on behavioral medicine, studying the intersection of behavioral and psychosocial factors with medical illness, and early on recognized the importance of emerging interactive technologies in health and health care. He left the clinical practice of psychology in 2000 to focus exclusively on research and program administration. Dr. Ahern has published across a broad spectrum of illnesses―chronic pain, cardiovascular diseases, and somatization disorders. Over the course of a 30 year research career, he has assumed investigator roles on numerous NIH grants/contracts in the areas of chronic pain psychophysiology, behavioral and psychosocial aspects of cardiovascular disease, somatoform disorders, and eHealth. While on staff at MGH, Dr. Ahern developed a nationally recognized Behavioral Medicine clinical and research training program and pioneered the use of innovative technology systems for outcomes assessment in health care. In 2001 he transferred his primary hospital appointment from MGH to the Brigham and Women's Hospital to continue ongoing collaboration with Dr. Arthur Barsky on research on hypochondriasis and unexplained medical symptoms. In addition to academic activities at Harvard, since 1997 he has been a senior scientist for a technology-based, health care firm in Rhode Island, creating a successful Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program resulting in over 15 grants and contracts.

In November 2001, Dr. Ahern was appointed Program Director for a 7 year, $10.3 million national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Health e-Technologies Initiative (HeTI), which awarded grants and supported research to advance the science of eHealth. The program supported scientific research that involved (1) providers or provider-based networks; (2) health care organizations; and (3) voluntary and community organizations. In addition, special emphasis was given to studies that assessed efforts to reach specific diverse populations, including ethnic and racial minorities, older adults, low-income families, and disabled persons. Twenty-Four grants were awarded under HeTI and over 50 scientific original manuscripts were published during the 7 years of funding ( www.hetinitiative.org). HeTI provided a practicum opportunity for students in public health to learn about the role of technology in improving health and health care. The Initiative concluded its work in April 2009.

In May 2009, Dr. Ahern was awarded a $750,000 18 month development grant from RWJF to provide expert technical assistance and guidance to one of the signature national programs of RWJF, Aligning Forces for Quality. He was appointed as Director of the Health Information Technology Resource Center (HITRC) based at the Brigham & Women's Hospital, providing the 16 current active communities across the U.S. with near term value of HIT for improving health care quality. In September 2010 the HITRC received continuation funding of $372,094 to support ongoing technical assistance activities for AF4Q communities. Over the next 2 1/2 years the HITRC enabled many of the Af4Q communities to benefit from investments in HIT through ONC and Meaningful use. The work concluded in April 2013..

In May 2010, Dr. Ahern was appointed to direct the Program in Behavioral Informatics and eHealth to expand research initiatives at the intersection of health information technology and mental health within the Department of Psychiatry at Brigham & Women's Hospital. Current projects include an initiative to deploy and implement technologies for assessment and treatment of psychiatric disorders within the outpatient department of psychiatry and pursuit of grant opportunities in health information technology and mental health.

Ellen Beckjord is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the Biobehavioral Medicine in Oncology Program at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. Her doctoral work in clinical psychology at the University of Vermont focused on delivering psychosocial interventions to breast cancer survivors and she completed her clinical internship at the Vanderbilt-VA Internship Consortium. Dr. Beckjord was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Her first year of fellowship was spent obtaining an MPH in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and she went on to join the Health Communication and Informatics Research Branch in NCI’s Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences. Dr. Beckjord’s research has focused on health communication and behavioral informatics, including projects addressing the role of affect in information processing, use of health information technology to facilitate patient-provider communication, health information management among chronically ill individuals, and use of mobile smartphone applications to support self-regulation, with an emphasis on regulation of health behaviors related to cancer prevention and control. Currently, she is a Clinical Research Scholar (KL2) at Pitt; her project is focused on developing a context-aware, mobile application for smoking cessation called QuitSmart.

this side idolatry

I too was a student of Watt's at Lafayette, and one who didn't have to take freshman composition because it was felt that I didn't need it. But I bought Watt's American Rhetoric (2nd edition) to read for my pleasure and instruction, and I have returned to it regularly in a long career of college teaching, as a guide to my own writing and a work I could confidently recommend to my students, children and grandchildren. In the interim I've also acquired a copy of the 4th edition, and recently bought a copy of the 5th for a friend. I know of no better book on English composition, and wish the publisher had not felt it necessary to let it go out of print. Watt's lively writing style, and his good taste in selecting illuminating examples of what to do and what not to do, make this book well worth premium prices. But the world would be a better place if it weren't necessary to pay them. This book deserves as wide a distribution as possible.

As for Watt's personal characteristics, I can well imagine that he may have seemed condescending to some. I'm sure he did not suffer fools gladly, particularly those who could not make the distinction between "affect" and "effect." I took four of his courses: a two-semester survey of English literature and a two-semester course on Shakespeare. These were among the best I ever had. They inspired in me a life-long love of both subjects. As an English major I also had the privilege of being invited to his home more than once, to meet visiting speakers like Robert Frost and W.H. Auden. I found him a warm and gracious host, and overall a wonderful man, as wise as he was witty. I can say of him what Ben Jonson said of Shakespeare: "I loved the man, this side idolatry, as well as any."

Good resource

I had to give the book a chance instead of seeing the word "rhetoric" and get intimidated. The author writes as if he is speaking to you in a conversation. I made sure to get this book and read it since I wanted to heed the advice of John Gardner, a master in his his own field. The main reason I wanted to read this book was to improve on "style" in English, but given the fact that this book was first written in 1952, we can imagine the kind of English it was written with, where we have got spoiled too much :) The book, however, does have some excellent concepts and it is a wonderful resource to consult from time to time, provided you are ready for it :) Yet there are more up to date books that seem to sweep me off my feet and and enticingly call me to come and "eat", I mean, read.
