Why did I go to B-school?
By William W. Holcomb
This book boils all of the marketing concepts I learned while in B-school(and some I didn't) into an easy read format. The only thing missing is that annoying quant-jock who sat behind my chewing gum the entire semester! If you just want a great introduction to marketing, or are an MBA looking to refresh your understanding of the 4P's, pick-up this book. You won't be disappointed.

Going beyond the actual...
By FrKurt Messick
As an undergraduate, I studied political science; as a graduate student, I studied history (among other things) - however, few if any of my classes ever dealt with the actual mechanics of business, despite dealing with business in a more general sense (as it would fit in the context of history and politics). I decided that it was important to learn some of the basic concepts of business administration, and the Portable MBA series by John Wiley & Sons publishers fit the bill.

This book on marketing covers the topic from the conceptual, research, and practical angles. Dealing with customers, potential and actual, is the key aspect to marketing. There are strategies that work and strategies that fail, and many of these are discussed and analysed. Companies included in the case studies include Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Colgate-Palmolive, Kawasaki, Campbell Soup, A.C. Nielsen, and literally over a hundred more. Just what is the magic that makes Nike a household word? How does one really assess the success of the cola wars between Pepsi, Coke, and other contenders?

In the foreword, Ken Blanchard (author of the 'One-Minute Manager') states, 'I have come to believe that the secret to competitive success is to give customers service so far above their expectations it becomes legendary.' Part of this strategy is to become a better listener (which is an art that is lost for many, particularly in the corporate world), and part of the strategy is to look beyond the actual and explore the possible.

The authors who contributed to this volume have both academic and professional experience, and tend to do a good job at explaining things in terms that the non-professional can understanding. Anyone with a basic undergraduate background should find this volume accessible. This book can also give one ideas for everything from garage sales to major marketing campaigns.

I taught marketing and advertising, having worked as a public relations/marketing director for a college and for a seminary. Had this book been available at the time I was teaching, I would not have hesitated to use it.

Rise Up and Salute the Sun: The Writings of Suzy Kassem, by Suzy Kassem

From her ancestral homeland of Egypt to 7th Street in New York City, Suzy Kassem's hypnotic imagination transports readers into a mystical place filled with wisdom and infinite wonder -- a place where a little Egyptian girl can converse with the Sphinx, where an ordinary house mouse trapped under the floorboards of a senior center in Jersey can dream about exploring fields beyond his ordinary limits, and where a young woman named Peace can still crave a caramel apple from Coney Island -- while confined for eternity to the lonely hotel rooftop from which she leapt to her death twenty years ago.

A powerful collection of philosophical short stories, essays, and poetry laced with stardust and universal wisdom, Rise Up and Salute the Sun takes the reader on a transdimensional journey to explore the heart of one's true existence.

Rise Up and Salute the Sun
By LoLo
After reading the first story "The Little Girl and the Sphinx" I felt like I had just had a personal conversation with GOD. The message was so simple a 7 yr old girl with a pure heart understood how to be a good person and live your life on the path of truth. I had to read it again almost immediately as I didn't want to miss any part of the message. This story drew me inside the conversation and it became my dialogue, and when a book or story can have that affect on the reader then that book is a quality read. Found the story and poetry to be a manual for living a conscious based life.

Highly Recommended Reading
By JB
For those that are searching for truth, Suzy Kassem's "Rise Up and Salute The Sun" is the perfect guide in pointing readers towards the right direction to this life long endeavor. For those that are not yet seeking, "Rise Up and Salute The Sun" will do as the title suggests - awaken. Not only will it awaken but it will also plant seeds. I have been following the writings of Suzy Kassem online for a couple of years now after stumbling upon her "Style Is King" blog and will say that every piece she has written is timeless, relevant and effective and the same rings true for the words contained in the poems, short stories and parables in the book. What is most admirable about Suzy and her writings is the strong conviction in her words as well as her selflessness to share such deep knowledge and wisdom freely. Most importantly as a voice of our generation, her messages flow straight from the heart. In this upside down world we live in, her words lead, uplift and light the way to a better existence, on a personal, local and international scale.

Really made me think
By Dona Corry
While at school, I heard this writer speak, and was blown away. I borrowed a copy of this book from my professor, and it was both one of the most enlightening and disturbing things I have read. Disturbing in that it made me look at some of my beliefs in a completely different way, and question my way of thinking. This collection of short stories, poems, and thoughts from the author was a profound influence in my live, and I can not keep from telling others about it.

Used to be more interesting. The main character has become predictable. If I read about his striking green eyes, his wife's "riotous hair" and his boss's incessant smoking... Also very black and white re: his politics without any of the grey areas existing. I do enjoy reading about the paintings and their history- as long as the artist who created it didn't suffer from his abnormally green eyes, had a riotously haired wife, and constantly smoked whatever was acceptable in the Renaissance. Entertaining nonetheless.

NOT EVEN A CARTOON
By William Lotz
An art restorer is murdered while trying to escape from an intruder. He is carrying a famous painting by Rembrandt, rolled up in a tube. The intruder's purpose was to steal the Rembrandt.

Gabriel and Chiara have retired from "The Office", and have moved to Gabriel's old haunts outside London, have acquired an old fisherman's cabin, and are living a quiet and peaceful life after a long career of turmoil.

Julian Isherwood, Gabriel's long time friend, who has brought many old masters to him for restoration, requests that Gabriel meet with him in his office. At the meeting, Julian tells Gabriel about the murder and theft of the Rembrandt, and asks Gabriel to find the killer and recover the Rembrandt, which is worth a fortune, as a favor to him.

Gabriel, who immediately recognizes the restorer's name, since he had been a serious competitor of Gabriel's, agrees.

And thus begins a new story. It appears that Gabriel Allon, Avenging Angel and assassin for the State of Israel, is now entering a new world of thievery of famous paintings, murders, hidden restorations and forgeries.

This is not true, however. This story is about a monster. A monster hiding as a saint who is a billionaire, donating millions to worthy causes. About the recruitment of a world famous investigative reporter (who was once in love with the monster) by Gabriel, to go undetected, discover the monster's secrets and help bring the monster down.

This novel had the makings of a wonderful novel, full of intrigue, forgeries, murders and suspense. And many instances it still does. However, dear readers, if read in its entirety, this is not the case. In my humble opinion, this novel is the worst of all previous novels by Mr. Silva in the Gabriel Allon series ( this being # 10) that required skimming. Even the final chapters were boring and without additional content.

In the intervening chapters, I found all of the detrimental aspects mentioned in previous discouraging reviews. There were also new discouraging factors, such as:

. Humorless interactions between allies and enemies alike.

. Extended and boring representations of dress: "His tie was the color of Bougelais Nuveau". How ridiculous! This occasion didn't require any mention of attire, much less than that of a sought after vintage of a purple wine!

Give your readers a break, Mr. Silva! Lighten up! Tone down the rhetoric!

To say that I discourage readers from reading this novel must be obvious. And so is my rating

I just can't leave Silva's alone. I get so involved in the action, the dedicated characters and how current the story is to today's events. The terrorist, the rotten billionaire, the highly trained and dedicated webmasters...wonderfully exciting reading. I'm tickled Amazon's recommended this series to me. I'm off to number 11.

Captulo Uno

Ustedes no tienen deudas?

“LOS MCINTYRE NO

TIENEN DEUDAS”.

—No— respondi Jim—. Ninguna hipoteca.

No parecan ricos.

Sue me mir fijamente.

—De verdad que quieres saber? —pregunt.

Asent sin decir palabra. Sue mir a Jim:

“DECIDIMOS PAGARNOS A NOSOTROS PRIMERO”.

Sue mir a Jim.

“VIGILAMOS NUESTRO FACTOR CAF LATTE”.

—Mir a Jim y a Sue.

—As es —interrumpi Sue—.

Ahora yo me senta realmente confundido.

Poco despus, yo tambin me ech a rer.

Jim me mir.

AHORA TE TOCA A TI

“Si yo pudiera ganar ms dinero”, aseguran, “sera rico”. Cuntas veces has odo a alguien decir eso? Cuntas veces te lo has dicho a ti mismo?

He aqu cmo luce la carrera:

VE A TRABAJAR… GANA DINERO… GASTA DINERO…

VE A TRABAJAR… GANA DINERO… GASTA DINERO…

Demasiado bsico
By F. Elizalde Rdz

Unclear and confusing
By John Sharp
I am an information technology manager who came up through the technical ranks. I needed a book that would give me the unifying concepts to deal with budgets.

Unfortunately, this book is not clear. It is a jargon nightmare without the story that would give the terms some meaning.

1. The term "balance sheet" is first used on page 10. It is defined on page 24. The author introduces a number of other terms in the intervening pages.
2. The author makes a big deal about the difference between "cost" and "expense." His definitions are bewildering. Unexpired costs are costs. Expired costs are expenses. Whatever that means.
3. The author is sloppy about using terms interchangeably--"differential cost" and "incremental cost."
4. The author loses me when he talks about the "physical flow of costs." Can anyone visualize the place where costs flow physically?
5. The author fails to explain the difference between differential costs and opportunity costs. Differential costs make a comparison of different different means to a single end. I would have said buy or lease a car. Opportunity costs are a comparison of different things you can get for similar amounts of money. I would have said get a sports car or get a SUV.

The introduction says this book is intended for "Managers who have little or no knowledge of management accounting. . ." Not so.

Recommendation: Don't even consider this book unless you already understand all the terms used in management accounting.

Mystifies more often than not.
By Bhamster
Unfortunately, this book does not live up to its title. The author clearly knows his subject, but is a poor teacher. From the outset, synonymous terms are used interchangeably without warning or explanation. Example problems (such as identifying costs in a table in chapter 2) are too dissimilar to real problems that you are meant to work out (the terms in the table columns have been changed so that it isn't clear what cost definitions you are working with anymore). If anyone is using this book to get the basics of management accounting, he will find this book inconsistent, convoluded and difficult - unnecessarily. Better organization and a critical editor's eye would have made this a much better book.

Dont waste your time on this rubbish
By Adam Mohr
After reading the predecessor to this book financial accounting and seeing how terribly written it was and how confusing the author makes the subject matter I'm not even gonna both attempting to waste my time on this one.

I will go ahead and trust the poor reviews after skimming this book..As well as noting that everythign they stated about this book was true about the Finanacial accounting one. So I will assume this one is no different.

4 bucks wasted on a crap text.
