Invaluable guide for librarians/teachers/ parents

I have all three guides in the "Best Books" series. The ones for Grades 6-9, and Grades 9-12 were purchased because of my teaching background, but this particular guide was bought as a parent trying to put together an age appropriate reading list for my preschooler. As with the other guides in the series, this book is thematically arranged, i.e.

Only useful for librarians

I purchased this when I just had a first child with a grand dream of providing all the wonderful books for him. It's very hard to judge a book based on the information given by this "Best Books" book, as it surveys hundreds of thousands of books with a sentence or two (uninteresting) descriptions of each. It's not for individuals, but more for institutional buyers.

About the Author
Even as a child growing up outside Buffalo, New York, Amy Lansky sensed that the world was a bit more mysterious than it appeared on the surface. After many years working as a computer scientist, she now pursues her life passion—to uncover deeper truths hidden behind the veil of our consensual reality. Lansky’s first book, Impossible Cure: The Promise of Homeopathy (www.impossiblecure.com), explored an unconventional form of healing—homeopathy. It quickly became one of the best-selling introductory books on homeopathic medicine and is now used as a patient education book and textbook all over the world. In this, her second book, Lansky explores the mysterious realm of human consciousness. Active Consciousness: Awakening the Power Within (www.activeconsciousness.com) draws on her interest in paranormal phenomena, her expertise in alternative medicine, her meditation studies, and even her research experience in artificial intelligence. Lansky graduated from the University of Rochester in 1977 with degrees in mathematics and computer science, and she received her doctorate in computer science from Stanford University in 1983. She did research work in artificial intelligence at several Silicon Valley institutions, including SRI International and NASA Ames Research Center, until she left the field in 1998 to pursue her interest in homeopathic medicine. This unusual move was prompted by the miraculous cure of her son’s autism with homeopathy. Since 2005, Lansky has been a student of Gary Sherman and Ellen Miller, the creators of a system of self-development and inquiry called perceptual integration (www.deepening.com). Amy Lansky is widely regarded as an expert writer and speaker on homeopathy. She has been featured at several conferences, her articles have appeared in leading magazines and online forums, and she hosted a radio show on homeopathic treatment of autism on Autism One Radio from 2006–2009. Lansky also served on the board of the National Center for Homeopathy from 2004–2011. She currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband Steve Rubin, and is an avid pianist, vocalist, and painter. She also enjoys needlework, swimming, and canoeing the lakes of Canada.

A Book That Will Change Your Life

We live in a time where the fate of the earth itself seems to hang in the balance, and people struggle with widespread feelings of powerlessness. In the past I've wondered, are the many popular books on shaping reality just wish-fulfillment? Amy Lansky has written the most well-grounded, reality-based book on the subject that anyone could ask for, in a style that is a pleasure to read. She makes scientific and philosophical concepts enjoyable and easy for anyone to understand. With a clear, visionary yet scientific approach, she ties together: current theories in physics and mathematics on extra spatial dimensions and the nature of the universe; an overview of high-quality studies of paranormal phenomena; and an overview of common understanding about the nature of reality in various ancient wisdom traditions. She teases out the common links which could begin to illuminate the hidden aspects of our Universe, including the possible existence of a unified field, the "zero-point field" of physics, which she proposes could be the ground of universal consciousness. She then explores the nature of human beings, considering evidence that we ourselves may exist in more than three spatial dimensions, and how higher-dimensional aspects of ourselves could easily affect our 3-dimensional world in ways that seem inexplicable from our limited, 3-D perspective. For me it was a delight to have such weighty subjects explained so clearly, with plenty of helpful analogies.

Ms. Lansky then discusses how, when we rise above the chatter of our daily existence, we can learn to enter a state of deep, active consciousness, in which we are in fact able to shape reality through the loving intentions of our highest selves. And the icing on this wonderful cake: she lays out a program of simple but extremely well-focused meditation exercises through which any reader can train themselves to connect more fully with their higher consciousness, and truly change their own life and help to influence the world around them. I am behind this book 100%. I believe these methods can be used as a tool to help bring about the evolution that many in our world are currently striving for. I'm about to leave home on a 2-month study trip, and I plan to take the exercises with me. Since reading this book and beginning the practices I have already noticed an increase in synchronicities in my life, and an greater sense of being assisted in the life goals on which I'm focusing.

You are more powerful than you realize, harness it!

If you have an interest in both science and spirituality, this book is an excellent read. Amy Lansky writes in a very accessible way, making scientific and esoteric subjects understandable and more importantly, very enjoyable to read. I love Ken Wilbur, I think he's brilliant, but I'd rather have Amy Lansky explaining these concepts to me in her succinct and clear way. She references her work so you can dig deeper and look further if you want to.

I love how she uses examples and analogies to bring her point across to the reader. The exercises included in the book let you take it out of a solely intellectual pursuit and have an experiential encounter with the material.

Amy writes from a place of clarity, both from the heart and the intellect. Thank you Amy for bringing your ideas and experiences to humanity in such a fun and authentic way!

Amy Lansky's ground breaking book, Active Consciousness is a must read for anyone interested in seeing our world through the exciting lens of a leading scientist and spiritual thinker. As a former NASA scientist and metaphysical scholar, she writes with precision and passion, telling stories that are real, soulful and extraordinary. The author is at heart a consciousness seeker, explorer and activist. Drawing from Lansky's luminous intelligence and keen imagination, she gives methods and practices for obtaining higher states of knowing. Most importantly this book presents a clear imperative to become an active participant for our own and collective well-being.

What is so compelling about Active Consciousness is that it is written with the rigor of a scientific thinker with the warmth and craft of a good storyteller. The author's intimate experiences are woven throughout the book, giving us a glimpse into the intriguing road she has traveled, which often crosses the line between the scientific and the esoteric. Wonderfully complex and controversial ideas are presented with artful elegance and simplicity.

Q - How would you describe The School of Exorcists series?

A - The School of Exorcists is a mix of teen and YA romance and adventure, sc-fi and fantasy, with lots of paranormal bumps along the way. I've always enjoyed reading books aimed at teens and young adults, especially coming of age series best sellers, they speak to my own inner teen, so you'll find lots of this throughout the series.

Q - Why did you want to write paranormal romance and adventure novels?

A - I love thinking about love and re-imagining my own teenage years, making them much more exciting! This series has been ten years in the writing and Ruby Carmichael and her paranormal adventures and romance can now be released for others to immerse themselves into. I wanted to write young teen and young adult books that engaged and excited readers of all ages and I hope The School of Exorcists has achieved that.

Q - What does it mean to you when readers buy your books?

A - I get a huge smile on my face, it great to know people enjoy my writing. Paranormal romance and adventure books can get a bad rap, too much Twilight and not enough action, but I will always enjoy this type of writing, and if I never sell another book and the best seller list isn't for me, I will still write paranormal books because I love them. The School of Exorcists has so many stories to tell, lots of undead, plenty of ghosts and magic by the bucket load. The School is going to keep me busy for years, and I hope readers will enjoy this journey with me.

It's a great read and pulls you into her feelings

This is Ruby's story and about her life in the mundane world as the adoptive daughter of a caring couple and introduction into the world of magic, spells, and helping to cross over lost souls at the school of magic referred to as the Exorcist Academy. I'm not sure why it is named this as the book does NOT include exorcisms. It's a great read and pulls you into her feelings, life and living in a whole new world, her exposure to people that are like her - magical, finding acceptance and love.. Of course there has to be bad guys, those that practice black magic.

I've now read 4 of the books in the series, and can't put them down!

Krosoczka's richly textured, double-page cartoon paintings, executed in a dark palette filled with multidirectional brush strokes and ominous-looking shadows, create an eerie Halloween night atmosphere. The effective use of perspective causes houses and glaring street lights to overwhelm Annie and the huge mansion to loom over her, its entrance stairway appearing to go forever upward. The hand-lettered, spidery-looking negative print is placed on dark ground and grows larger when frightening questions are posed. This deliciously scary offering, paired with Linda Williams's The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything (HarperCollins, 1986), is guaranteed to haunt Halloween storyhours.

I had to give it five stars because my 2 and 3 yr old girls love this book. This is the book they ask for almost every night. As for me, not alot of substance, it plays on the whole "boo" factor without too much indepth story. The glow- in-the-dark thing I don't get, we don't read in the dark. But the main thing is that this book is not for me, it is written for a child and my children love it more than some of the great books seen as classics. If your children are young it is a fun book and ends happily.

A scary story to be enjoyed year-round

Annie was told not to go out to the creepy old Montgomery mansion. EVERYONE knows there is something about that old house. But, c'mon now, she WAS born on Halloween, wasn't she. Annie is not afraid of creepy old places, and she isn't scared of haunted places. Or creepy old houses full of bats and spiders. BESIDES ALL THAT, her friend did dare her to go.

So, on Halloween night, of course, Annie sneaks out and heads for the dark and foreboding manse. Ooops, what was that at the back of her neck? And, was that a bat flying by? Empty, dark streets and howling wind can cause even the bravest girl to have a little feeling of the jitters, even if she was born on Halloween. Oh no, she hears whispers as she climbs the stairs leading to the front door. Trembling a little she stops for a minute, and then she opens the door.

My resident critics, fifteen first graders, hurried to the rug for reading time. Thirty bright eyes found the cover of Annie Was Warned compelling. Six year olds tend to enjoy spooky and icky, creepy and scary.

Writer Krosoczka offers a good straight on narrative just right for reading aloud. Vocabulary is just spooky enough to appeal to my resident critics. Short and snappy text is suitably spine-chilling. With each turn of the page a new, thrilling moment is encountered.

Spooky illustrations set against a black background, portray this spirited little girl's daunting expedition along the dark, empty street in the howling wind. The full double-page paintings are shown using multi-directional strokes, are accomplished with murky shades forming great spooky shadows; together they produce a ghostly Halloween night atmosphere. They gave us something to talk about for consideration when we do our art work.

Writer/Illustrator Krosoczka uses his talent to create slighting intimidating houses and glaring street lights which seem to almost engulf the trepidatious Annie. From the monstrous, creepy manse with its entry stairway appearing to ascend forever upward to the cobwebby, negative print hand-lettering set on dark ground which grows larger whenever frightening questions are asked, Krosoczka builds the suspense.

The last page folds out, offering an unsuspected surprise. Writer Krosoczka's Annie Was Warned is a suitably scary tale meant to be enjoyed any time and especially at Halloween.

My resident critics and I enjoyed the reading. Annie Was Warned gave us discussion starters about listening to rumors, and 'everybody knows' type statements. It gave us the chance to talk about seeking answers and trying to find out what is really happening, perhaps there is a friend just beyond the moment we are in who is just waiting for us. We talked about why Annie felt so afraid, the children were able to verbalize that her fears had as much to do with her own preconceptions as with either the hour or the 'forbidding' night. We discussed how letting others do our thinking may prevent us making our own good choices, may cause us to think in error, and may cause us to miss the chance for meeting a new friend. We discussed how gossip and rumor may hurt, be in error and is just plain not the best as opposed to perhaps seeking answers, letting our own choices guide us and doing thinking for ourselves.

Annie Was Warned is a book we continue to enjoy despite Halloween been long behind us this school year. Happy to recommend. Annie Was Warned is a read to for the 4 - 8 set, for the older readers in part because the first reading may be frightening, it is a read with help for the 7-8s and a read alone for the 9-10s. The book is a good choice for the personal reading shelf of children and for the home, school, classroom and public library list.

We're talking predicating, inference, details from illustrations, character descriptions, sequence of events, beginning middle end. LAMBDA LITERARY -- Princess Princess Ever After is a warm-hearted graphic novel centered on the adventures of two strong-willed princesses. Playful in tone, this colorfully illustrated story was originally published as an online comic, but was later picked up by Oni Press for hardcover release. The story begins when Princess Amira rescues another Princess, Princess Sadie, from an archetypal tower. The two use some creative problem solving skills to make their way past the typical fantasy novel obstacles of ogres and evil sisters. Through the arc of the story, both characters learn to recognize their self-worth, their different strengths, and to appreciate each other. The book feels as though it aims to reach young readers, giving them a cute story with happy young lesbians; yet some of the language and storytelling feels as though this is the kind of book that will land best with teenagers and older readers. The book does not shy away from addressing what is usually considered mature themes; the narrative directly takes on issues such as sexism and fatphobia. Sadie describes herself as "big-boned" and her sister includes "fat" in many of her tirades against her. Amira's parents expect her to marry a man when really she wants to go adventuring. These are stories which teenagers can especially relate too as they begin to explore their place in the world. Although, let's be honest, everyone can relate to the idea of failing parental expectations. I especially loved how the book spotlights Sophie's kindness and compassion as a strength. The graphic novel also smartly highlights Amira's fierceness and independence. Katie O'Neills' joyful and cute illustrations give the whole book a sense of fun. The ending provides an adorable cap to the story. (I won't give away any spoilers, but I doubt anyone would be surprised how the story ends.) This is a book with a lot of genuine heart; it is an adorable book whose fable-like story is perfect for any princess or prince in your life.

AUTOSTRADDLE -- I'm so glad that there is a story like this that exists. The princesses don't fit into the stereotype of the damsel in distress who wants desperately to be rescued by a prince. It has characters of different races and body types. It has two princesses who are their own heroes and don't need to change who they are to save themselves and the day. It has a really cute queer couple. And all of this is in an all-ages comic.

O'Neill's delightful fairy tale will appeal to romance lovers, fantasy/adventure fans, and readers looking for LGBT-positive stories for young readers. In addition to the sweet romance, there is sword-fighting, magic, and a simply adorable dragon. There's also a touch of kid-appropriate language (Amira is fond of the word butthead), which is all part of the silliness that keeps the story from ever getting too dark. O'Neill's warm, friendly drawings add to the fun of this body-positive story that also features a main character of color. Appropriately for a fairy tale, O'Neill wraps things up with a wedding that promises happily-ever-after, sealed with a kiss. Give this to young romance readers, and watch them smile.

Beautiful

I read this first as a webcomic, and loved it so much that I bought a small .zip from the author including some special art and the story. I looked forward to it becoming a book for a long time, and am thrilled to own a copy. The story is sweet, and the author, Katie O'Niell, makes clear conscious choices to make the entire story a positive experience.

The art is lovely, the book's paper and binding quality is great, and the story is sweet and interesting.

Diego Simeone es una refleccion de que el trabajo con pasion y amor al futbol se paga con buenos momentos. Personalmente admiro mucho a Diego. Tengo mucho en comun con su personalidad y profesionalismo y es por ello que me encanta leer sus relatos y vivencias de su vida!

Excelente libro para seguir adelante, para descubrir, aprender y trabajar duro con pasion!

Very basic. I was expecting the same passions we see in his team. Very little anecdotes worth the US$20 I paid for the e-book. It must have been written from a transcript recorded in a sitting one afternoon.
