Shortly before her death in 2004, Elisabeth Kbler-Ross and David Kessler, her collaborator, completed the manuscript for this, her final book. On Grief and Grieving is a fitting completion to her work. Thirty-six years and sixteen books ago, Kbler-Ross's groundbreaking On Death and Dying changed the way we talk about the end of life. Now On Grief and Grieving will profoundly influence the way we experience the process of grief.
On Death and Dying began as a theoretical book, an interdisciplinary study of our fear of death and our inevitable acceptance of it. It introduced the world to the now-famous five stages: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. On Grief and Grieving applies these stages to the process of grieving and weaves together theory, inspiration, and practical advice, all based on Kbler-Ross's and Kessler's professional and personal experiences, and is filled with brief, topic-driven stories. It includes sections on sadness, hauntings, dreams, coping, children, healing, isolation, and even the subject of sex during grief.
"I know death is close," Kbler-Ross says at the end of the book, "but not quite yet. I lie here like so many people over the years, in a bed surrounded by flowers and looking out a big window....I now know that the purpose of my life is more than these stages....It is not just about the life lost but also the life lived."
In one of their final writing sessions, Kbler-Ross told Kessler, "The last nine years have taught me patience, and the weaker and more bed-bound I become, the more I'm learning about receiving love."
On Grief and Grieving is Elisabeth Kbler-Ross's final legacy, one that brings her life's work profoundly full circle.

This book holds your mind, heart and soul as you grieve...
By Lora Jansson
Two weeks ago last Monday, my beloved canine companion and business partner, Star Gazer, died. My grief is huge, bigger than any notion of the infinity of space. Then last Monday, my father died. And a whole new grief began, different in texture, character and substance. I am learning there are many kinds of grief.
I am blessed to have a husband and friends who love me, and a spiritual practice -- shamanism -- which has taught me that death is graduation day. Still, I am alone in this grief that knocks me about like a tsunami, slamming me underwater, inevitably driving my body into sharp rocks that cut. Knowing life transmutes helps my Self, but missing these unique beings who were so very important to me hurts my self. Both are true.
This book is holding my hand. It is a cliche to say it is a user's manual for grief for it is not mechanic, and it is trite to say it is an angel because that is imbuing it with sentimentality which it doesn't have, and not honoring the tenderness it does have. Mostly, it is bringing peace about the rightness and complexity of grieving -- not so much explaining it away as mapping it so that the terrain is less unknown and terrifying.
Whether you grieve you parent or your partner, the world or your circumstance, this book can help.
Namaste.

It will not be happy circumstances that bring anybody to a book on grief
By Vicki
It will not be happy circumstances that bring anybody to a book on grief. I have given this book as gift and have been told when ready, this book will comfort or at least promote understanding of the grief. I purchased the book to place in a box that my daughter will have after I pass.

relief for the grieving soul
By Kanchana Bandara
This is a very gentle and reassuring book for anyone trying to come to terms with the loss of a loved one. I lost my father to cancer last year, and during his illness I read "On Death and Dying" by the same author. That book helped me greatly to understand what I could do for my father at a time when I felt helpless. "On Grief and Grieving" is clear and easy to read, and gives very practical advice in a gentle way to help a grieving soul find solace, by pointing out that each person grieves in a different way and at a different rate, and that no one else can tell you when it is time to get over the loss...Indeed, the authors clearly state (and I agree) that there is no getting over the loss so to speak..only a learning to live with it. In a world where many are uncomfortable with sadness and tears, this book tells us it is okay to feel and express both. Anyone who has lost a loved one, or is trying to support someone who has experienced such a loss should definitely read this book.
