The worst textbook ever!

I have been using this book for three months now because I am required to. The worst book ever in terms of how things are written down. It has so many typographical errors. And the explanation and examples are minimal for the different statistical tests. The internet and wikipedia explain things better than this book. I didn't buy this book on Amazon, I got it from the university websites. It's a waste of $140-$150 bucks or whatever you paid for it. I cannot use this book without having to google things.

I will probably write more details about the errors and inadequate explanations and provide examples, once I finish my final exam.

maybe its the level I am that doesn't require such comprehensive knowledge; but even if that was the case I think its still a hard read. Its not really simplistic enough or visually appealing.

This book is great to begin the study of fundamental elements of AI directly in the best suited language to program AI - LISP. To so many it may seem outdated, but think twice and make no mistake about the power of LISP. If you are somebody who needs to proceed building an intelligent platform, this book is the best starting point in making sure you have the basics. By saying "basics" doesn't mean this book is trivial, as it refers to a very advanced area of Computer Science.

concise & clear

This statistics book got me through the muddiness that was my Statistics lectures. When you can't understand the words coming out of your professor's mouth, dive into this book for clarification. It's strategic, using efficient stages to set up your knowledge base for the next piece of statistical information. I'd never taken a statistics class before, and I can't claim to be brilliant at math, but this book helped me pass my class with an "A". (So did my TA tutor, god bless him.)

Book is great... Condition sucks

The book is great for learning statistics on your own. I would give it 5 stars but the used book that I bought came with over half of the binding separated. Day one of opening the book the binding completely separated from the spine and now I cannot even do the buy back program with the book. I am extremely irritated that I paid $152 for a used book that I cannot even sell back.

How The Paleo Approach Saved My Health (after years of low-carb paleo)

While you all have waited patiently for years as Dr. Sarah Ballantyne wrote The Paleo Approach, I was lucky enough to begin following her protocol well before it was available to the public. I started my journey on healing when Practical Paleo first came out and I started with the methodologies Diane put forth for autoimmune conditions (autoimmune protocol: AIP).

Problem was, after following the AIP for nearly 3 months I wasn't seeing healing. Some of the super negative symptoms were alleviated, like adrenal fatigue, clumps of hair falling out and terrible acne, but when I reintroduced foods I would get flares again. I distinctly remember it being SO. HARD. Like, temper tantrums in the car hard because everything, EVERYTHING I was used to eating had eggs or nightshades and I was overwhelmed at the idea of living the rest of my life that way. All of which contributed to my ongoing struggles with depression - the obsession with food was beginning to overwhelm me, it was starting to cause disordered eating again, as I looked for ways to "get around" the AIP.

I was so frustrated, I began talking with Sarah about what her thoughts and recommendations were. It was at this time that Sarah was hundreds of thousands of words deep into writing The Paleo Approach (no, seriously, it's a tome). There were a few things she shared with me about what she found in the scientific literature about recommendations she was going to make, versus things I'd read in Practical Paleo and other resources.

And so it began, in 2013 I started following The Paleo Approach. Mostly this meant that I focused more on what to add to my diet instead of what to remove from it. Sarah and I talked every week on The Paleo View and nearly each episode each one of us would get more and more geeked out on nutrient-density, our new favorite word. We began exploring healing foods; Matt and I became so inspired that we wrote the nose-to-tail cookbook, Beyond Bacon - almost every recipe of which includes bone stock and/or lard (high in Vitamin D and easy for me to digest).

I'd been following a low-fat, low-carb version of paleo for years. Turns out, it made me sick. It affected my adrenals, thyroid function, and ability for my body to heal itself. I was nutrient-poor, despite eating what I thought was the best diet possible. Perhaps for some people eating that way is healthy for them, but for me as a busy woman with no gallbladder and previous metabolic syndrome, it ended up as a disaster long-term. Turns out, a high protein diet (especially when the protein is mostly poultry) wasn't doing what I thought it was for my health. I got over my fear of fat and incorporated more nutrient-dense healing fats, specifically lard, coconut oil and ghee/butter (I was shocked how well I tolerated ghee and butter after a lifetime of being dairy intolerant). I switched my proteins to a majority of grass-fed red meat and pastured pork, added seafood and incorporated the true superfoods: organ meat and bone broth.

One of the things I learned from Sarah is the importance of vegetables. I've popularized #morevegetablesthanavegetarian in social media - but it was Sarah's focus on the importance of vegetables - specifically a variety of colorful ones - that really made me focus on them. For a while, I'd actually reduced the types of vegetables I was eating because I wanted to stay away from foods high in insoluble fiber - which I personally let affect the quantity of veggies I was eating. When Sarah told me she had research that greens rich in insoluble fiber, even cruciferous ones, showed to be positive healing foods from her research it was a big change in how I approached nourishing myself. As I started adding in much more vegetables, especially leafy greens, it was amazing how much it affected my digestion and how I felt.

From the prior AIP protocol I was already consuming fermented foods rich in probiotics, which is another big important factor in helping to heal the gut through food. So then I turned to lifestyle factors.

I learned to love myself and let things go. I know... it's hokey. And intangible. And something I can't possibly define for you to replicate... although I've tried to articulate it a zillion times on The Paleo View. Stress Management was defined and something I began when I first started Practical Paleo`s AIP. But it's not something one can fix overnight. Over time, and through Sarah's repeated reminders of the scientific backing behind stress being a leading causes of health deterioration, I learned how to slay the stress monster.

First, I gave myself permission to do something(s) for me. Without guilt or remorse. It was really hard in the beginning to know I was missing out on time I could (or as I thought, should) be doing: helping with dinner, spending time with the kids, staying later at the office, etc. But then I realized I deserve to take care of the only body I'll have to carry me through this life. My children deserve a role model to show them that sometimes it's OK to stop and put the gas mask on yourself before helping others - I learned to take care of myself first before putting others ahead of me. This, was huge.

I learned to breathe. There was a point at which my stress levels had caused an eye twitch I couldn't get rid of for months. And I had begun grinding my teeth and experiencing frequent headaches from it. I even had about a 6 week period of time where I was experiencing frequent anxiety attacks in crossfit, unable to breathe when something ended up being harder than I anticipated. It made me want to quit, and I've never been a quitter. It was at this time Sarah talked to me about relaxation techniques she highly encouraged. It was so bizarre for this scientist to be telling me to do some hokey-pokey-crunchy-granola-meditation... but she was right. My body was overwhelmed and needed a break. So several times a day I intentionally stood up and walked around the office, finding someone to smile with and change my environment while activating happy hormones. During crossfit I learned to breathe in through my nose and out through my mouth with deep, intentional breaths. Soon, the twitching and anxiety attacks just went away!

I learned to let things go. This was the hardest for me and is something I'm still actively working on. I talk out loud about what I can or cannot do. It's about acknowledgement, doing what you're able the best you can, and then forgiveness. What a concept... all backed by science to help you be healthier!

Be positive! No, really. Of course not everything's great. But almost everything has something positive about it. So I learned to frame things to myself positively and it helped me have an overall positive outlook and attitude.

Sarah goes over LOTS more stuff in The Paleo Approach but these are the things that I personally applied to my own life.
The results?

I've resolved ALL of the autoimmune related health issues I experienced in 2011 and 2012.

Let me restate that, because I want to make sure it's heard. I no longer have symptoms of autoimmune disease, adrenal fatigue, micro-nutrient deficiencies, skin breakouts or depression (at all). My body has not only recovered fully from the autoimmune flare, but I've actually been able to heal my body even further - now able to consume foods like high quality heavy cream and cheeses without distress! And when accidentally exposed to gluten or intentionally eat things I know my body has a difficult time with (like nightshades or grains) I find each and every time my body responds better than the time before. I have successfully reintroduced nuts, seeds, chocolate, egg yolks and seed spices (all in moderation) but have found that egg whites and nightshade vegetables (except peeled white potatoes) are something I can not (yet) tolerate.

I plan to continue my healing journey and hope to be a role model for those out there with autoimmune conditions. Keeping in mind that 2 years ago I was depressed with barely enough energy to slog through the day (thyroid and adrenal issues), I now am a fully charged woman who manages this blog, a podcast, writing books, a full-time job, raising 3 boys AND am training for a StrongMan competition in just a few months. I'm happy to report that The Paleo Approach quite literally gave me my life back.

Not quite all I was looking for

There is a lot of information in this book on why you should follow this protocol if you have an autoimmune disease. She includes a lot of scientific data to prove her point. All that is good.

She then gives information on how to start the program, which foods to avoid and which are ok. Then how to re-introduce foods that you have eliminated from your diet. Also good. (Kindle/tablet readers see my warning below)

Then information on lifestyle change, also good.

I think there was too much scientific information...at least half the book as it related to paleo and auto-immune disease. Then more when discussing lifestyle change in the second half.

I would have preferred less science and more details on how to actually use the diet. I would have liked examples of several meal plans, I would have liked more specific information on how much to eat of each food group. I use My Fitness Pal to keep track of my daily intake of all foods and their nutritional vakues. I still am sometimes eating more carbs than fat or protein, sometimes the protein is more than fat. Because I am guessing as to quantity/ serving size. My understanding is fat should be the highest percentage of calories, then protein and then carbs, but I am not sure how to get there. I need that type of detail.
There are NO recipes in the book.

WARNING. I purchased the Kindle edition. The lists of foods are basically unreadable. Parts of words are scattered all over the page. This is true of 90 % of all the lists in the book. I had to go online to get food lists from other sources. So that part of the book was worthless to me. But did not base my review on that, but certainly left a bad experience. That should be one of the most important details, but could not be read.
I feel like I did not get my money's worth with the Kindle edition.

While I am not thrilled with the Kindle edition of this book, I am very pleased with the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol diet. I have been following it religiously for just over 4 months now and can attest to its effectiveness. I have Myasthenia Gravis, a rare autoimmune disease that causes muscle weakness.
Prior to starting this diet, I was so weak that some days I could barely walk, had problems swallowing, breathing and severe double vision. On good days, I could go to one store with my husband and help with laundry and at times some light chores. Now 4 months later, I play golf twice a week, can drive myself to stores and actually shop. I am back to doing all the cooking, laundry and many other household chores. I also walk 1 to 1.5 miles a day. I do have to rest often and I need a handicap flag when playing golf. I still require routine medication for this disease. But instead of getting weaker each month, I am now getting stronger.
My husband says this diet is a miracle and I agree.

It is not a 'fun' diet to be on. It is very restrictive and I miss a lot of my favorite foods, plus it can be a little more expensive. But in my opinion all that is worth being able to participate in life again and feel better while doing it. All my physicians have reviewed the diet and all have 100% approved and encouraged me to stick with it. For some reason I found that surprising. I assumed at least one would have some doubts or concerns. But it was just the opposite.

Just thought I would share my experience.

I'm healthy today thanks to Sarah's protocol!

For anyone with an autoimmune disease, this is the most incredible gift from heaven you could ever wish for. It is the most thoroughly researched, detailed and comprehensive roadmap for recovery. Seriously, this book is going to change thousands of lives, and that is no understatement!

How do I know this, you ask? I used these principles, personally, to heal myself from two debilitating autoimmune diseases.

Back when I discovered the Autoimmune Protocol, Sarah’s blog was in its infancy, and there were a few voices in the Paleo community talking about these “extra modifications” that were necessary for those with autoimmune disease. While I started with an elimination diet, my journey ended up addressing all of these other pieces of the puzzle that didn’t really fit into a simple diet change. Things like learning how to prioritize sleep, managing my stress, getting the right amount of physical activity, sunlight exposure, circadian rhythms, and doing further testing and treatment for deeper issues (gut pathogens, parasites, fat malabsorption, and the MTHFR mutation) and finally finding meditation and doing work on an emotional level. Sarah addresses all of these topics, and then some, in this book, and has backed up what many of us have found by trial and error with hard science.

The Paleo Approach is divided into two parts. The first half of the book is called “The Cause”, and its chapters detail what autoimmune disease is, how the immune system works (complete with amazing diagrams), what causes autoimmunity, how diet and lifestyle factors contribute to our conditions, and what to do with all of this information. The second half is called “The Cure”, and it contains the details of Sarah’s plan—which foods to include, lifestyle habits that promote healing, how to transition, troubleshooting the protocol, and reintroductions. I’m not going to spend a lot of time summarizing the information here—but just know that Sarah has gone into an incredible amount of detail to talk about just about any question or topic you could have.

Some of my favorite aspects of the book:

-Comprehensive charts of foods to eat and avoid. She has also included a copy in the back of the book for easy reference. When I say comprehensive, I mean eight pages, with a small font. I would be surprised if anyone could find a food that isn’t included on either of these lists!

-Detailed illustrations to complement the intro chapters. The immune system is incredibly complex to understand, and Sarah’s illustrations made so many of the concepts of leaky gut and the immune system more understandable. They are really well done!

-Chapter reviews, summary guides, and nutrient tables. I found the chapter reviews helpful for synthesizing the most important information in a section. The summary guides in the back are an awesome reference, as are the nutrient tables.

-Troubleshooting checklist. This is an awesome tool for anyone who has tried the approach and needs some ideas of areas to consider because they aren’t making progress.

The last thing I want to tell you about—this book has a lot of information. By a lot, I mean over 400 pages, literally crammed full of the most thoroughly researched, pertinent information you could hope for. Sarah tackles some pretty deep scientific concepts with her signature approachable, and fun writing style. I think it is absolutely necessary for those of us with autoimmunity to understand these concepts in-depth, so that we can have a better understanding of how our bodies interact with the environment as well as so that we can advocate for ourselves best in the doctor’s office.

If you have an autoimmune disease, please do yourself a favor and get this book.

If I haven’t convinced you by this point, I don’t think there is any hope for you! I am living a healthy and happy life today, because of these principles—they saved my life. Sarah is an incredible force and we are so lucky she was able to create such a life-changing roadmap for recovery using ancestral diet and lifestyle changes to heal from autoimmune disease!

Nothing can compare with the joy of the open road. The sense of possibility and adventure brings feelings of exhilaration, long submerged in the workaday routines of home. Cheap air travel has opened up parts of the globe once reserved for the seriously affluent. When travelling in far-flung corners of the world, you can escape the demands of modern life in the Western world, the chores, the clutter, the technology. Whatever your stage of life, travelling spontaneously means you have the freedom to choose from an infinite spectrum of possibilities. Instead of trying to finance the expensive trips advertised in glossy travel brochures, what about trying to find alternative ways of experiencing those same places at a fraction of the cost?

The catchy phrase `work your way around the world' may contain the answer to the thorny question of funding. Picking up bits and pieces of work along the way can go a long way to reducing the cost. Even if it is unrealistic to expect to walk into highly paid jobs in Beijing or Berlin (though they do exist), other informal ways exist of offsetting the cost of travel. Work-for-keep arrangements on a New Zealand farm or Costa Rican eco-lodge will mean that you have to save far less than if you booked a long-haul package holiday to those destinations - in some cases little more than the cost of the flight.

Short of emigrating or marrying a native, working abroad is an excellent way to experience a foreign culture from the inside. The plucky Briton who spends a few months on a Queensland outback station will have a different tale to tell about Australia from the one who serves behind the bar in a Sydney pub. Yet both will experience the exhilaration of doing something completely unfamiliar in an alien setting.

Anyone with a taste for adventure and a modicum of nerve has the potential for exploring far-flung corners of the globe on very little money. In an ideal world, it would be possible to register with an international employment agency and wait to be assigned to a glamorous job as an underwater model in the Caribbean, history co-ordinator for a European tour company or snowboard instructor in the Rockies. Since the last edition, the world's economy has suffered a huge blow resulting in an alarming rise in unemployment figures worldwide and a dramatic collapse in the value of sterling. This book has been around for so long that I can remember the last major recession at the beginning of the 1990s. Ironically, that crisis seemed to create more opportunities for casual and temporary work because employers did not want to commit to taking on more permanent staff.

In these troubled times, the idea of fleeing to a new place with potentially new opportunities and a stronger currency might appeal more than ever. If job prospects are dire at home, why hang around to become depressed? Travel can transport you to a new universe where credit crunches don't seem to matter so much. If you are convinced that fi nding work at home will be next to impossible, one idea is to broaden your horizons and your skills elsewhere, by working in a Rocky Mountain ski resort or temping in an Australian city. Volunteering or interning may also prove a worthwhile investment in enhancing future career prospects, perhaps a placement teaching in a school in the Andes, or joining a marine research project in Madagascar.

Nowadays, working abroad has become such a mainstream idea that it has spawned scores of websites, been featured on primetime television and is serviced by a huge infrastructure for those who want to combine work and travel. This book has grown up with the travel industry and takes account of all those shortcuts to fixing up work abroad that now exist. The inclusion in its pages of hundreds if not thousands of potential employers, mediating agencies and useful internet sites sometimes makes me feel like a walking database.

Yet the swashbuckling kind of traveller who is prepared to carve out his or her own adventures is also alive and well and using this book to navigate. For this fourteenth edition of Work Your Way Around the World my network of informants included a new graduate who exchanged Spanish for English lessons in Santiago Chile until he was in a position to land a teaching contract at a prestigious English institute, a New Zealander who has found casual work from Buenos Aires to Stockholm, an Irish woman who ignored the discouraging recruitment and visa info from Disneyworld and spent a terrifi c year in Florida, a man no longer in the first flush of youth who has worked in exotic places like Mali and Mauritania, and is now in a small city south of Beijing as an English teacher, saving some of his salary for his next adventure, a young English woman who used an agency to fix up an internship in a video production company in Sydney, and a school leaver who busked in Paris and Seville and is now exchanging a few hours of work a day in order to stay free at a lakeside hostel in Guatemala. Almost with one voice, these travellers urge people whatever their backgrounds to give it a go and expose themselves to the unexpected friendliness and generosity of foreign residents and fellow travellers. Anybody who occasionally feels the call of the road, the spirit of adventure flicker will, I hope, enjoy reading this book and dreaming. My aim has been to make the information in these 404 pages as concrete and up-to-the-minute as possible, to cut all the vague generalities and waffle.

But amongst all the specific contact addresses, websites and realistic practical advice, the stories of working travellers are interwoven to inspire and encourage. This book is written to renew optimism and spark the imagination of all potential travellers.

Bible for financially sustainable travel through Europe and Anglo cultures

This book is helpful to those who want to travel more but need to find a way to get by without hemorrhaging money. And even if you don't want to do this, it's interesting to read about those who do.

Reading about travelers saving up money by working long days picking fruit, getting discounted rates on cruise liners by helping the crew, or generally taking jobs that nobody else wants, I realized that personally, I was probably happier saving up money at a desk job and paying full fare. However, there's a lot to be said for working abroad providing a cultural immersion experience that just can't be achieved through mere tourism. Aside from paying work, there are some helpful listings for international volunteering organizations. And, if you're interested in teaching English, you've got it made just about anywhere in the world.

This book is so up to date, and so packed with interesting and useful information, and most remarkably, so responsive to feedback from past readers (who are mentioned by name throughout) that anyone can find something useful here.

My only criticism is that the title of the book is misleading. This book is heavily focused on Europe (200 pages) and focuses on opportunities available to those with EU citizenship. It doesn't really do justice to most of the *world*. There are more pages on Australia (44 pages), for example, than all of Latin America and Africa COMBINED.

Focuses on EU citizens; unrealistic/useless for most others

Well, I'm one of those Americans who has been there, done that and still doing it...and it wasn't because of this book.

More than years ago when I first went to Europe with the intention of finding work, short-term or long-term, my brother's girlfriend gave me this book as a gift because she found it useful. Let me say right off that I had no clue about traveling abroad or what was possible, even in a pre-9/11 world. But it seemed to me that the book concentrated heavily on Brits and Europeans and gave mostly common sense advice I could glean from my head (or a friend or successful expat, if I was clueless) and come up with the same or better info if I searched the Internet; plus, the author is an EU citizen, so what first hand experience does she really have in regards to non-EU citizens? The updated version hasn't changed much, and I'm puzzled by the fact it's in its 13th edition, when most people can find better and more current information online without spending a dime.

I'd also like to add that my brother's girlfriend (now ex) who loved this book, never found work abroad in her 5 years and told me I would never make it either. I told her I wasn't her, left the book behind and never saw it again. I first found a series of short-term jobs that I can only describe as experiences I can laugh about now. Then I built a life from literally nothing that has led to living and working in Europe for more than 10 years (and counting).

It is true that Americans have a more difficult time finding work in Europe simply because of EU citizenship requirements AND the world has changed significantly in that there are an abundance of Eastern European workers willing to work for cheaper than Americans/Canadians/Australians would and they're legal EU citizens. Still, showing up at the right time (and there ARE right times) and looking a certain way will more likely get you a summer job than sending a CV/resume, making calls or wasting time on placing ads or trolling forums. I don't know any employer who has hired anyone on paper or over the phone, even if you're already here in the country.

My best friend was placed in Poland, well-paid and provided housing for 2 years teaching English without any experience, certification or previous interview. He had a great time. The next year, he took a stint in Turkey during his vacation under the same circumstances. There are also plenty of opportunities, different and sometimes better, in very beautiful places outside of Europe. Another friend landed in South America with no intentions of staying and worked there happily for 3 years, learned to speak Spanish, gained experience that gave him an advantage in his flourishing career now located in Washington DC.

Aside from Europe, there are very strict requirements in place in Asia and Africa as well. Even those seeking to skirt permit and work authorization for those continents via dual citizenship may find the requirements quite difficult. In short, you cannot simply work your way around the world even illegally, never mind legally, because of upped security measures and economic recession.

Buying and reading this book, however helpful it is in small ways, is not enough. Sometimes, an adventurous attitude, thirst for experience and willingness isn't enough...sometimes it's just lady luck smiling on you. In some countries, it's strictly about connections.

I'm sorry I can't be more positive because I know it's tough to write a book and there are people out there searching for some assistance. But I think it's equally important to be honest.

He graduated from UCLA School of Law and holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, with majors in Economics; Environmental, Population, & Organismic Biology; and Environmental Conservation.

His environmental advocacy, including several major Clean Water Act cases in Los Angeles, has been featured in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and The Christian Science Monitor, among numerous other publications.

Steve Fleischli has written another hard hitting book that points the finger squarely in our own face insisting we make the decision -- who am I going to be? Will we go along to get along, commit to self-righteiousness without any consequences, make the ultimate decision or have the world choose for us?

Thanks so much for this amazing book. It's a must read!

Simply Loved It

Simply loved the Book. Was gripped from chapter one on. Filling the car up at a gas station will never be the same. This is not only a riviting story but also an insight into corporate ethics and personal responsibility. This book should be required reading for anyone interested in law or the environment.

This book deserves highest ratings because it is entertaining fiction and very realistic at the same time. The author captures a very realistic perspective that highlights the controversies and nuances that can surround environmental justice and policy issues. I especially enjoyed the rich character development - it really made me feel a personal connection with the protagonists. Bittersweet...

VERY HELPFUL!!

This is a gem of a book that I refer to often for positioning of those rarely done or difficult to position exams. This book is nearly complete from head to toe in MRI positioning and is easy to read with great photos showing slice selections. It includes pituitary, orbits, cranial nerves, TMJ's, brachial plexus, elbow/FABS view, pancreas, fetal, pelvic arteries, femur/quads/hamstring, foot and other more and less common exams. Each chapter begins with an anatomy drawing with labels to the important/obscure parts. Every section in the chapter clearly states what the different series demonstrate in the anatomy which I find very helpful when a patients diagnosis is already known and certain sequences can provide greater detail for the radiologist. Using this reference has helped build my confidence and made me look really smart to my peers too. Thanks Anne Bright!

I would reccommend this book to any new tech for anatomy review and planning your localizer
One thing I noticed, it did not have the IAC planning.
