A Primer of Genome Science, Third Edition, by Gibson, Muse

Genome science has matured as a discipline to the point where it is now incorporated as a regular part of the genetics curriculum in universities. A Primer of Genome Science, Third Edition bridges the gap between standard genetics textbooks and highly specialized, technical, and advanced treatments of the subdisciplines. It provides an affordable and up-to-date introduction to the field that is suited to advanced undergraduate or early graduate courses. Bioinformatic principles and experimental strategies are explained side-by-side with the experimental methods, establishing a framework that allows teachers to explore topics and the literature at their own pace. The Primer is organized into six chapters dealing with the scope of genomics, genome sequencing, variation and complex traits, gene expression, proteomics, and metabolomics. Each chapter includes several boxes explaining the theory behind bioinformatic methods, discussion questions, and a summary. This edition has been updated to include the latest developments in next-generation sequencing, high-volume genotyping and expression profiling, and advances in metabolomics.

Review
In realizing that the field is unlikely to slow down any time soon, by simply demonstrating that they can keep pace with it, the authors have again succeeded with a well-organized view of the present and future of genome science. --Brian C. Verrelli, The Quarterly Review of Biology

With the huge data sets that are produced in genomic studies, many mathematicians and computer sciences researchers, as well as cell biologists and classical geneticists, are being drawn into working on problems from a genomics perspective, and they will profit greatly from reading this book. The work also provides an affordable introduction that is suited to advanced academic coursework. As in earlier editions, the illustrations, special topic boxes, and hands-on exercises are superb. ... Highly recommended. --K. A. Newman, Choice

A very good, updated introduction to genomics
By Jeremy Leipzig
This is an upper level genetics textbook and contains chapters on genome projects, genome sequencing, genomic variation, gene expression, proteomics, and systems biology. There are review questions at the end of the chapters - but that should not imply that this is an elementary textbook. I can only comment on the first four chapters.

Chapter 1 has a somewhat prosaic rundown on the overarching goals of genome sequencing as well as the status of various organisms. There is a interesting section on the history of the competing approaches to the human genome project.

Chapter 2 contains one of the best textbook reviews of BAC and WGSS sequencing techniques I've seen anywhere. Chapter 3, which deals with SNPs is very strong. This is an excellent textbook to get if you are confused about the relationship between QTLs, SNPs, and haplotypes. The authors tie it all together without holding back for fear of overgeneralizing. (e.g. "the vast majority of QTL effects are almost certainly due to as yet unidentified SNPs") You can write a technically correct textbook without explaining things like that but it is no better than a doorstop. I was grateful the authors had the common sense to rise above mere formal pedagogy.

Chapter 4 is very microarray-intensive, which is kind of a shame given how quickly microarrays are disappearing from the scene. RNA-seq is mentioned but it needs to be compared with DGE.

The authors are a geneticist and statistical geneticist and so while very knowledgeable sometimes give the impression of being a bit above the fray with regard current bioinformatic analysis strategies. Because there is no discussion of how short read data is actually processed (hint: it's not with BLAST) the presentation of second and third generation sequencing technology seemed a bit token, but impressive given the time constraints of publishing.

There is room for improvement in the way some topics were discussed in an orthogonal manner but not directly mentioned in the glossary. As I mentioned there is a lot of microarray stuff, a paragraph on CNVs, but the two ideas are not connected via the competitive hybridization technique, which is one of the ways microarrays are still relevant. The terms "methylation" or "epigenetics" are not even in the index even though there is a page on ENCODE.

As I bioinformatics programmer I found this a valuable resource for learning more about population genetics.

It's OK -- had to buy it for a class, probably wouldn't have chose it myself. Not very mathematical, although for some people that's a good thing. Still, very simple conceptual introduction.

Longbow (The Saga of Roland Inness Book 1), by Wayne Grant

Roland Inness is a peasant boy with an unusual talent—and a secret. He has learned the art of making a longbow and the skill to use it with deadly accuracy. Why must this be kept secret? The Normans rule England with their armored knights and a well-aimed longbow can pierce that armor. Possession of the weapon is a hanging offense and when Roland takes the wrong deer on the wrong Lord’s land he has to flee for his life.

His flight will take him from the high hills of the English midlands to the wild frontier with Wales and on to the court of Richard the Lionheart. Along the way he is hunted by a paid killer, aided by a strange monk named Tuck, and taken in by a gruff Norman knight, who values his skill with the bow. That skill and his courage will be sorely tested as he fights to earn the trust of his new master.

As King Richard celebrates his coronation, Roland faces old enemies he thought he had left behind and must test his skill at a royal archery tournament against the greatest bowmen in England, to include the favorite, Sir Robin of Loxley.

A mix of history, myth and high adventure, LONGBOW follows the journey of Roland Inness as he seeks to find a place for himself in a restive kingdom and become a man in a brutal age.

Review
“An action-adventure set in 12th-century England, this is an appealing read filled with bows and arrows, sword fights, and the like. Roland, “taller than most of his age and sturdily built,” is forced to flee his home in Kinder Scout after the horrible murder of his father, Rolf, at the behest of the Earl’s son…By celebrating Roland’s courage and bravery, the author gives audiences an engaging hero they can easily root for.” ~ Publishers Weekly

From the Author
Longbowis the first book in theSaga of Roland Innessseries. I actually began telling this story to my two sons when they were middle and elementary school ages, but as they demanded more adventures from my hero Roland, I found it too hard to spin a coherent tale of this length right from my head. So I began to write the stories down and it became a bit like an old Saturday matinee serial. After several months of weekly installments, I went back and looked at what I had done and it struck me that I had the "bones" of a book. With considerable effort, those "bones" became Longbow. The second book in the series,Warbow, was published in January, 2015. That novel takes Roland and his companions to the 3rd Crusade, where Roland sees the ugly face of war and tests his mettle, while back in England, Queen Eleanor tries to preserve the throne for King Richard against the machinations of Prince John and Sir William de Ferrers.

About the Author
Wayne Grant grew up in a tiny cotton town in rural Louisiana where hunting, fishing and farming are a way of life. Between chopping cotton, dove hunting and Little League ball he developed a love of great adventure stories like Call It Courage and Kidnapped.Like most southern boys he saw the military as an honorable and adventurous career, so it was a natural step for him to attend and graduate from West Point. He just missed Vietnam, but found that life as a 2nd LT in an army broken by that war was not what he wanted. After tours in Germany and Korea, he returned to Louisiana and civilian life.
Through it all he retained his love of great adventure writing and when he had two sons he began telling them stories before bedtime. Those stories became his first novel,Longbow.Longbowis the first book in theSaga of Roland Innesstrilogy. He is well along on his second novel,A Knight for Kinder Scout, which takes Roland and his companions to the 3rd Crusade and back again to England. It will be published in the spring of 2015.

Longbow: Excellent read for young and not-so-young
By Ron
Longbow is intended for young folks, but as others observed, those of us in the older generations also found it quite enjoyable. Wayne shares fascinating firsthand views of both the history and the customs of the day. Roland's thoughts and biases about the Normans, Saxons, Irish, Scots, and Danes were especially interesting. I also enjoyed his tying in the coronation of Richard and the upcoming Crusade. Those boys and men going off to war were as motivated and fearful as they are today. The inclusion of Tuck and Robin (commented upon in the author's notes at the end) was just plain fun. No doubt, Wayne's research was thorough and valid, and the stories about the interaction among the complex social classes helped me understand life in the day. But it continued to be entertaining--something my history teachers never mastered.

Each character was thoroughly developed. It would have been easy for the author to include "cardboard cutouts," but we didn't see any of that. While everyone identifies with Roland, all characters were fully human and as good or as bad as we see in the world today. Culture and technology have changed in the last millennium, and Wayne demonstrated humans have not.

Excitement and suspense were interspersed at the right intervals. We hoped (maybe we knew) Roland would survive, but witnessing how he pulled it off each time was a pleasure. All fiction requires a degree of happenstance, but Longbow was quite believable.

As the full title suggests, we'll see Roland and his buddies in other books having further adventures. I'm a fan and will read each one. It's good to see a young person's book that does not include vampires! There also was a notable lack of adolescent love affairs. Roland had an obvious stirring so we have to believe Millie will reappear in later books.

Well written, tight, exciting, good story - real characters - a fine read!
By James B. Edwards
This is just one heck of a good read! I have to say, I was a bit dubious when a friend recommended this book to me. I figured it was just something for "young adults", which I am not and haven't been for decades. But, my friend, an Army Ranger, wouldn't shut up about it, so I decided to give it a quick read. I'm glad I did!

While the lead character may qualify as a young adult, the story is not of that limited appeal. It's just a great, exciting tale and an easy and fun read. Lots of action and thrills and suspense. A fine story that flows well, will catch you up, and won't let go. Well done, very well done, indeed, on the story front. But, unlike some authors who can put together a good story but can't draw a character or script a line of believable and natural dialogue, Grant can do both, as well.

Character dialogue in novels set in past times can sometimes be a real problem. I can tell when it's not being done well when it distracts me as the reader. Often I've found it to be too tortured and affected, trying too hard to sound like maybe that's the way folks actually talked back then. (One "forsooth" will sink it for me.) Other times, it's 'way too modern, or just has too many modernisms included to get away with it. Either way, when I start noticing the dialogue, as such, there's a problem. Good dialogue seems to slide right in, as natural as can be, and doesn't distract. Grant does just that. I was well into the book, captured by his story, before I remembered that I wanted to consciously focus on his dialogue. I wanted to check that out because, first, I know I could never do it well; and, second, I know that when done right, it's a sign of a very good and skilled writer. So, then, I spent some time looking into it and found that he has just the right balance of old and new. It works and it works seamlessly and effortlessly.

Another aspect of the book that was a pleasant surprise was the character depth and development. Again, I had this dismissive idea of "young adult" which I wish I'd never heard concerning this book. (While it's perfectly appropriate for young adults, it's just as interesting and entertaining for anyone. More on that below.) Anyway, I was expecting these two-dimensional, standard cookie-cutter, formulaic characters, like pretty much everything on TV and in the movies these days. Again, a very nice surprise. Grant clearly put in a lot of time and effort in crafting his lead characters, beginning with Roland, but it was especially surprising to see that his secondary characters (Millicent, Declan, Sir Alwyn, and Catherine come to mind) have individual depth and catch the reader's interest too.

Finally, I think it helpful to note that this book is "safe" for anyone, of any age, to read (or to have read to them). Yes, there's some violence and some bad guys (and the occasional good guy) who get rough treatment, but Grant doesn't make it overly explicit gore, blood, and guts. Not the stuff of nightmares, though it is quite exciting and suspenseful. Plenty of action. Language is perfectly acceptable, proving that you can write a good story, filled with good characters, without having to cover up mediocre writing by dropping distracting and unnecessary F-bombs right and left.

So, in summary: well written, tight, exciting, good story - real characters that develop and grow and ring true - a fine read. I recommend it highly.

Well worth reading
By MikeW
I picked this book up through Kindle Unlimited. Many of the offerings in the Kindle Unlimited are self published and unfortunately self edited too. Not the case here, this book was well written, grammatically as well as factually.

The characters were well fleshed out, the plot moved at a good pace and frankly, it was difficult to put this book down. I practice primitive archery as a hobby and the information about the longbow presented is fairly accurate in its construction, history, and use. Longbow is one of the few pieces of fiction I have read that accurately present archery.

This not just a good book for boys, it is a good book for all. I look forward to Mr. Grant's next addition to this series.

once upon a time in america While fairy tales are usually associated with European sources like the Brothers Grimm, American Fairy Tales: From Rip Van Winkle to the Rootabaga Stories, edited by Neil Philip, preface by Alison Lurie, illus. by Michael McCurdy, defines a unique heritage on this side of the Atlantic. The selections include both familiar and little-known tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Louisa May Alcott, L. Frank Baum and, as the title suggests, Washington Irving and Carl Sandburg. McCurdy's dramatic black-and-white woodcut prints add an eerie edge to the distinctive stories, which are a cut above the more usual, normalizing fairy tale retellings. Headnotes for each story provide brief biographies of the authors.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-An impressive collection of 12 stories representing the development of the American fairy tale from 1819 to 1922. Leaving behind the gloomy atmosphere and more formal language of their European counterparts, these literary selections reflect the landscape, egalitarian philosophy, and forward-looking optimism of America. Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" is firmly placed in the Kaatskill Mountains, while Nathaniel Hawthorne's "Feathertop" is filled with New England superstitions. The contentment of ordinary life is emphasized in Horace E. Scudder's "The Rich Man's Place" and Laura E. Richards's "The Golden Windows." The heroine of Louisa May Alcott's "Rosy's Journey" is solidly self-reliant, and the protagonists in Howard Pyle's "The Apple of Contentment" and Ruth Plumly Thompson's "The Princess Who Could Not Dance" are cheerful and independent. L. Frank Baum's "The Glass Dog" and Carl Sandburg's "How They Broke Away to Go to the Rootabaga Country" portray inventiveness and the pioneer spirit. Sandburg's tale, as well as M.S.B.'s "What They Did Not Do on the Birthday of Jacob Abbott B., Familiarly Called Snibbuggledyboozledom," employ a unique American idiom with their zany words and phrases. Independent readers may find the archaic writing of some of these selections difficult to deal with; others are quite readable. Each story is introduced by information about the author; sources are included. McCurdy's skillfully executed black-and-white woodcuts, both full-page scenes and vignettes, illustrate each tale. This volume provides a rich read-aloud for families who like quality literature, and will also be of interest to children's-literature students and folklorists.

From Booklist
Gr. 6^-8, younger for reading aloud. A patriotic-looking jacket with blue stars and red stripes adorns this collection of 12 stories drawn from an American literary tradition that includes such characters as bee-men, goose-girls, kings, fairies, and wizards. Editor Philip provides an introductory essay about the "American fairy tale" and briefly introduces each selection. Children might tend to mistake this for a history text and avoid it, but teachers and parents will appreciate the variety of stories and the roundup of famous writers, including Hawthorne, Sandburg, Alcott, and Baum. McCurdy's woodcut illustrations give the stories a sense of the past yet still allow plenty of room for fantasy. The tales will make pleasant read-alouds, but a few contain language or allusions that now seem racist or sexist; for example, Hawthorne's Feathertop wears "the Black Man's wardrobe," which is equated to the devil's clothes. Source notes and related readings are appended. Karen Morgan

A hundred years of American fairy tales.
By K. Roman
Introduction: Alison Lurie, a professor at Cornell University wrote the preface. She sums up a hundred years of American Fairy Tales and introduces the stories in two pages.

Organization: There is a table of contents and the stories appear to be arranged chronologically. The illustrations by Michael McCurdy are simple black and white ink drawing and scratch boards that remind me of illustrations I saw in hundred year old periodicals.

The stories themselves: The stories vary as much as the authors. Some, like Feathertop, are quite literary. Here is an example sentence. "'Poor fellow!' quothe Mother Rigby, with a rueful glance at the relics of her ill-fated contrivance." As written, these stories may be better read than told. The stories are also fairly long so a teller might need to trim them.

Source Notes: Each story starts with a lengthy source note that includes some critique and history. The Afterword by Neil Phillip is long, detailed, and scholarly. Phillip states that he chose to look at literary tales with a named author for this collection. He critiques and puts the stories into their historical framework. He looks at the broad changes seen in the hundred years that he covers.

Final Thoughts: This is a very scholarly look at American fairy tales. Sadly, most Americans are probably not familiar with more than one or two of these stories. This book would make an excellent text book for a high school or college English class and should be required reading.

Audio version makes good car listening
By Cincy Yankee
This collection of literary fairy tales by American authors (from the early 1800's to 1922) makes excellent car-ride listening. While adults and kids alike will enjoy the stories, this book offers more than that. An introduction discusses what elements American writers changed or added to the traditionally-European genre of the fairy tale. Each story is also followed by a brief introduction to the story's author that mentions what particularly American elements readers can find in the story. I really enjoyed this book on two levels: the enjoyable "story-time" of listening to the tales, and the analytical thinking-time of the introduction.

The only thing that detracts from the audio version of this book is the horrible synthesized music that plays just for a few seconds at the conclusion of each story to mark the end. Fortunately, the reader is excellent and the music goes away quickly.

A beautifully illustrated, wonderfully written collection.
By Midwest Book Review
Just having returned from 18 days in the UK two of those spent in jet and bus travel and eight more getting the most out of an eight day Brit Rail pass that we could I must say that even though I have stopped running I feel like I am still running in place. That is how I get some of my best ideas. Those of you who know me know that I sort hang at the margins of the formal academic study of literature. I do this because language and literature study are really sort games which you have to learn the vocabulary (lexicon) if I were presenting at a conference or writing for blue noses.
Well one of the hottest games now in the world of literature is the study of the postcolonial literature of the former European colonies, South Africa, Algeria, Vietnam, or what ever. If you were a young academic then it would be well to focus your study in this area. This is especially true if you want work in something other than the house keeping and food service industries as your ultimate career goal.
That got me thinking as I re-read and loved Rip Van Wrinkle by Washington Irving in this wonderful collection that I was reading perhaps the archetypal work of post colonial literature, old henpecked Rip (a subject of George III), has a few beers with some very serious 120 year old Dutchman as he falls in with them in their the secret Hudson River Valley meeting place.
Twenty years later he wakes up to find he is an American Citizen. I don't but know for sure but, I bet a lot of post colonials feel like that They share with Rip one very large hangover. Well I could go on and play the game further but I think you have the idea, and as a dear friend of mine once said sometimes Philip a little of something goes a long way. So let me get back to this wonderful book , as I urge you to add it to your collections
American Fairy Tales is a collection has something for everyone .It is a collection of American tales, which really serves three publics. First of course the adolescent reader who may miss or only seen fragments of these wonderful stories. Next the eternal Adolescent likes my self at age 55 who loves a good story. It also serves any serious students of children's literature, this medley of stories progresses chronologically across a century, from Washington Irving's "Rip Van Winkle" to Carl Sandburg's "How They Broke Away to Go to the Rootabaga Country." From the Maleficent Witch, Mother Rigby, in Hawthorne's "Feathertop" to the ethereal fairy in "The Lad and Luck's House," Book List had some good things to say about it "A patriotic-looking jacket with blue stars and red stripes adorns this collection of 12 stories drawn from an emergent American literary tradition that includes such characters as bee-men, goose-girls, kings, fairies, and wizards." Editor Neil Philip provides an introductory essay about the "American fairy" tale" and briefly introduces each selection.
I loved the variety of stories and the collection of famous writers, including Hawthorne, Sandburg, Alcott, and Baum. McCurdy's woodcut illustrations give the stories a sense of the past yet still allow plenty of room for fantasy, woodcuts have a haunting timeless look about them. Theses stories are made to read aloud. But it must remembered that because of the time they were written but a few contain language or allusions that now seem politically incorrect. But we must be careful not to throw out the baby with the bathwater. American Fairy Tales is a beautifully Illustrated book you may have to work a bit to find it.

Colin Thompson's enigmatic artwork once again takes center stage in Falling Angels, the story of a girl who can fly. Sally thinks she's the only one who possesses this power but soon finds out her grandmother once flew, too. (Hutchinson [Trafalgar Sq., dist.], $16.95 32p ages 5-8 ISBN 0-09-176817-9; Oct.) In The Haunted States of America: Haunted Houses and Spooky Places in All 50 States... and Canada, Too! Joan Holub tells of ghosts said to guard buried treasure in Arizona's Superstition Mountains; in California, the Winchester Mystery House, built by the wife of the heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, was designed with maze-like hallways, secret rooms, as well as stairs and doors "leading to nowhere" in an effort to elude the ghosts she thought were haunting her. From School Library Journal
Gr 3-6-In this haunted guidebook, readers are asked, "Do you believe in ghosts?" and told to "-read on, IF YOU DARE-." The scares are delivered as promised. White House ghosts, the infamous Winchester House of San Jose, Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau of New Orleans, and so much more are offered to those looking to have a fright or two. The chapters are short-most are two or three pages long. The drawings and few scattered photographs are not enough to entice readers. However, the stories make up for the lack of quality illustrations. Spooky words such as "apparition" and "exorcist" are included in the glossary. This title will be as popular as Alvin Schwartz's Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (HarperCollins, 1981) and Robert San Souci's A Terrifying Taste of Short and Shivery (Delacorte, 1998). Fans of those books will certainly gravitate toward this creepy-but oh such a fun-offering.

Good Used Book
By Minnie Mouse
I bought this book for my 10 year old daughter. She had checked it out in her school library but was unable to find it any where else. She was mad that she had to turn it back in before she got the chance to read it all. After trying to find it to buy brand new, I gave up and bought it used. The book had average wear but for the price it was in pretty good shape.

Things that go bump in the night
By Aletheia Knights
Who doesn't enjoy a good shiver once in a while? Is anyone such a hardcore skeptic that he or she doesn't enjoy just entertaining the idea, every once in a while, that there might be more to this existence of ours than science can readily, or ever, explain? Every delicious chapter of "The Haunted States of America" draws the reader into a creepy world of apparitions and strange phenomena that may (or may not) exist among us, in places we can easily pinpoint on the map, or maybe even visit. With the shivers and thrills densely packed into an average of two or three pages per chapter, even reluctant readers may find themselves up past their bedtimes, unable to resist the temptation to read just a little bit more.

The engaging style and the variety among different kinds of stories make this book well worth reading, but I would have enjoyed a few more pictures. While the wide scope of the book will appeal to casual readers just looking to enjoy a scary story, those with a more serious interest in history, folklore, or parapsychology may prefer to seek out a work of less breadth and deeper focus.

About the Author
Eliezer Yudkowsky is the author of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, the most-reviewed Harry Potter fanfiction on the entire internet as of 2015. He's a decision theorist who has done some work on theories of reflective probability, and is unable to prevent this from infecting even his most frivolous writing. He considered trying to pass off this book as the anonymous Internet translation of a Japanese light novel that mysteriously nobody would be able to find, but gave upon the idea after he realized that this work was going to be very clearly traceable to him.

Ridiculously funny and over-the-top. At times somewhat explicit. Ends too suddenly. Still well worth reading.Kept laughing out!
By Markus Gutschke
Without giving away too much of the plot, let's just say that the author picks a couple of main characters, settings, and concepts that are familiar from popular culture, mythology, or literature. He then simplifies them all the way down to the most essential set of rules. And then proceeds to string these rules together in the most logically consistent, but absolutely ridiculous sequence of events.

The story at times gets a little sexually explicit. By definition not any worse than what would commonly be encountered on the internet, but that's not exactly saying much. The adult content is an integral part of the story though. So, a mature reader is unlikely to be bothered, and a lot more likely to laugh out loud considering the sheer ridiculousness of the plot -- a younger reader might not get the references and could be confused or disturbed.

Overall, the plots twists are highly entertaining and there are enough curve balls that I enjoyed reading each and every one of the short chapters. The downside to this style of writing is that it only works well, if the characters are static. Any amount of character development would break the illusion of a twisty, but logically inevitable plot development. Similarly, once the plot has run its course, it is difficult to continue the story without breaking the spell. And since so much depends on surprising turns in the plot, I am not sure I would read the story more than once nor enjoy it after reading spoilers.

Consequently, not only is the book rather short, it also ends quite abruptly. In a way, the sudden ending makes the story feel like a highly amusing first chapter of a longer work. This longer work, if it existed, would continue telling a story in the same universe, but not necessarily using the same over-the-top plot devices and flat characters. As is, I am a little torn between enjoying the hour of entertainment that I got form this purchase and feeling let down because it ended so suddenly. I would happily pay for a book that extended our view of this particular universe.

Not Safe for Work.
By M.G. Harmon
First, Yudkowsky's new story is sick and wrong (but not in an explicit or graphic way, don't worry). Second, it is so unspeakably and weirdly clever it will break your brain. And really, don't read this at work; your insane laughter will certainly be noticed.

Hilarious
By Jessica M Richards
After a bit of cringe on my part at the beginning, I don't think I stopped laughing the entire way through.

If you've ever spent time reading s***ty light novel translations, Yudkowski created a pitch-perfect parody practically all the way through, with the occasional exception of a too well-constructed paragraph.
