Excellent reference book for shoulder therapists!

I am an occupational therapist and have been attending courses sponsored by the St. Francis Orthopaedic Institute for many years. I have always come away from these courses with new knowledge about the shoulder, practical tips for clinical application and renewed inspiration for treating my shoulder patients. Now the same surgeons and therapists who have been presenting at these courses have finally put their knowledge, experience and research into this fabulous hard cover book that is an easy reference in a busy clinic. It is worthwhile to take the time to read and study the chapters that relate to the shoulder patients you are treating. You will find all the details you need to fully understand specific shoulder conditions and the rationale behind the best way to treat them. When you are in a hurry and need a jump start on a new patient, you can also quick-reference the protocols outlined at the end of each chapter which give week-by-week guidelines for specific exercises to do with specific diagnoses. I love this book! It is comprehensive and evidence-based but still easy to read and the rehab principles all make good sense. It is packed full of absolutely beautiful color photos and medical illustrations, the best I've ever seen. If you are treating shoulder patients in your practice this book is a must-have!

This book ranks as high as any compendium on the market today for clinical evidence-based research. Clinical experience from contributing authors spans hundreds of years. They have participated in an enormous amount of research to create this logical, current, highlighted, and systematic approach to shoulder rehabilitation. Photography and anatomical illustrations of the shoulder, related structures, and surgical procedures are superb, revealing some of Carol Capers best work at "simplifying" the oftentimes complexed, surgical anatomy of the shoulder.
I bought this book as soon as it was available. Having practiced over 35 years in the athletic training and physical therapy professions, it is certainly one of the best "go-to" books in my reference library. The clinical pearls vividly display key points and specific guidelines regarding rehabilitation for various shoulder problems. Additionally, and critically important, all patients, family, and even other medical personnel deserve to know "what" therapists are doing and "why" we are applying certain rehabilitation principles during our course of treatment and rehabilitation. Protocols for various nonoperative, pre-operative, and post-operative shoulder diagnoses are staged in easy-to-follow timeframes to apply and explain in an orderly progression.
I highly recommend "A Systematic Approach to Shoulder Rehabilitation." All clinicians who deal with upper extremity problems, including physicians, therapists, and other allied personnel will benefit from this valuable resource. It would also be useful to have this book as a part of a physical therapy or athletic training curriculum.

Required reading for anyone interested in the debates on prositution

Rachel Moran has written not just a moving memoir, but also a powerful critique of the sex industry, and the callous notion that prostituted persons consent to their abuse. She aptly demonstrates how those who benefit from prostitution (pimps and johns --- or prostituters, as she calls them) prey upon the least powerful and the most marginalized, profiting from their desperation, poverty, youth and prior experience of abuse to reap profits for, and satisfy the desires of, those who are positions of power over the prostituted. Anyone who believes prostitution is a consensual act between equal parties needs to read this book. Some truly horrible policies are being promoted right now that seek to legalize and normalize the abuse of prostitution (in the name of human rights, no less!) If you're interested in sound policies on prostitution, listen to survivors and read this book.

VERY BRAVE

This is a must read for all those third wave feminists getting the idea that getting paid for sex is in some way empowering. This is a heart wrenching and believable account of what the real costs are to being a sexual commodity. It is not up-in-your-face but quietly harrowing as I imagine the actual experience of being a prostitute is. It is honest and so brave. This is a necessary book for young women today who are getting the message (in mainstream media no less) that being paid for sex is glamourous, high-paying and a choice. This book will give you a birds-eye view of the reality and the pain inherent in selling your body. I applaud the author.

Shocking but inspiring

This is a deeply personal and moving account of a woman who was forced into prostitution at a very early age, but survived to tell the tale. Rachel Moran's memoir is a simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting story that will both shock and inspire many readers. This book reveals the appalling and demoralising conditions that many prostitutes are forced to endure, and the quiet despair that many of them experience. `Paid for' is a passionate and thought-provoking account of the oldest profession in the world, and will surely generate considerable debate about the future of this sordid industry. This book is absolutely essential reading for anybody interested in basic human rights and dignity.

Possibly the most important book on Islam you will ever read. It goes beyond the simplistic characterizations of peaceful and violent Muslims, but delves into the theology that undergirds modern Islam in many of its variants. It will surprise you, anger you, but also give you hope. The origins of peaceful Muslims are discussed, but in a very nuanced way that doesn't give way to naivete about the theological consensus. Give it a read no matter how you feel about Islam: you will learn a lot. Robert Spencer does his homework and hardly indulges in gross simplifications. He takes on claims about Islam head on with citations from Islams respected scholarly authorities, leaders, and historical accounts.

As an Arabic linguist who has read the Koran, Mr. Spencer made crystal clear quite a few charming concepts that went completely over my head the first time. For example, "those whom your right hands possess" doesn't sound nearly so innocuous when you realize this is Koranic euphemism for slaves (something this "perfect book" takes completely for granted).

As is often the case with this author's works, the free world ignores him at their own peril.

I liked the fact that Mr. Spencer did not tell me what to think about the Koran ,but rather what it said and allowed me to make up my own mind. The refferences were broad and many to get an idea that this book was not his own idea, but others as well. Match it with the Koran in english and you get the big picture. Good read.

Good Book on a Mostly Forgotten Part of World War I

"The Killing Time: The German U-Boats 1914-1918", by Edwin A. Gray, as the title says, is a book about the German U-Boats during the first World War. Mr Gray is a British author who has published numerous works, most of which deal with submarines.

This is a fine book that covers the different types of U-Boats, how the mission of the U-Boat transformed from attacking only warships to attacking merchantmen, and how the U-Boats evolved from basically unproven curiosities to effective war weapons. Mr Gray also covers how the British defenses evolved over time to combat the U-Boats, so that by the end of the war, the Allies had managed to dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the German submarines, although only at great cost.

Although submarine warfare in World War II is what sticks out in popular memory, the German U-Boats in World War I actually sank more overall tonnage and probably came closer to winning the war for the Germans than did their World War II counterparts.

As an aside, many of the first person anecdotes included were taken (with permission) from "Raiders of the Deep: German U-Boats in World War I", a book by Lowell Thomas written over 40 years before "The Killing Time". In 1928, Mr Thomas interviewed many of the surviving top-scoring submarine aces from World War I, and put together accounts from the German side. Although it's a very uncritical book and some of Mr Thomas's facts could have used a more thorough checking, his book is a good companion to this book, offering exciting first person perspectives on many of the campaigns and events covered in Mr Gray's book.

I am not sure how many histories of German U-Boot warfare from WW1 are out there, but this is a 'must have' for anyone interested in the topic or sub warfare in general or WW1 in general. The author, 'though English, treats the subject with objectivity and seems to be almost sympathetic to an enemy arm of forces that most people still look upon as murderers and pirates. Definitely puts the reader in the conning tower. The companion volume: The Underwater War tells the story of the WW1 British sub force. Also a dashed-good read.

Do you really need it?

I don't know if it was worth it to buy this test individually. Granted, if you are someone who has worked their way through all of the other preptests, by all means go for it, but if you haven't even gone through one book yet, maybe wait on buying this one.

I'm NOT Related to the Author and I Really Liked the Story!

In response to one reviewer's comment, Jenika, I don't know the author and I'm not related to her but I really like the book and think that the Series has a lot of potential. I find it irritating and insulting that some readers who don't like a book question the integrity and validity of the reviews of the readers who do like the book. They make no room for the fact that everyone is entitled to his or her opinion and taste is as varied as individuals. Jenika, yours is not the only opinion that honest.

Yes, the writing in the first chapter or two is a bit choppy, but the story was interesting enough that I pressed passed it and was rewarded. The plot is original and I really like the main characters especially Brock who too alpha male sexy for words. Yum! I love paranormal cozy mysteries with romance and this Series has the potential to be a really, really good one. I recommend that the author get a editor to help with her writing shortcomings as well as assisting her with catching editing errors like missing words and repetitive phrases as was present here. I took off one star for the latter. However, overall I rated the book on how much I enjoyed it despite it's obvious shortcoming, the originality of the plot, the characters, the character development, the Serie's potential, the wise pricing, and the slow progression and genuine chemistry between Brock and Jasmine. I found the book quite entertaining and I can hardly wait for the 2nd book due out next month. At .99, if you like paranormal cozy mysteries, I say buy it, read it and Enjoy. Just realize that it does have some shortcomings.

Your werewolf/witch/biker/ghost stories fun, you'll love this one. I personally love the thought of hot werewolves, and the one Ms. Ashe has, hum conjured up is indeed hot. Sir Edward is a riot, drinking vodka at the worst possible time, running his mouth when he should be sleeping off his drunk. Loved this book! Cannot wait for the sequel!

Having already been familiar with this author from her Izzy Cooper series, I didn't hesitate starting this new one. I really enjoyed everything about this book. Instead of giving tedious dialog about the main character's history all at once, it was scattered in bits & pieces throughout the book. Just like how it would happen when someone new comes into your own life. Jazz learned about her history at the same time the reader does. This, in my opinion, gives the reader a better connection to Jazz and the development of the relationships with the other characters. A smart mouthed talking monkey, enjoyable characters & an interesting storyline that sets up the background for future books. Great start to a new series!
