How to increase or diminish human capabilities...including your own

In this book written with Greg McKeown, Liz Wiseman juxtaposes two quite different types of persons whom she characterizes as the "Multiplier" and the "Diminisher." Although she refers to them as leaders, suggesting they have supervisory responsibilities, they could also be direct reports at the management level or workers at the "shop floor" level. Multipliers "extract full capability," their own as well as others', and demonstrate five disciplines: Talent Magnet, Liberator, Challenger, Debate Maker, and Investor. Diminishers underutilize talent and resources, their own as well as others, and also demonstrate five disciplines: Empire Builder, Tyrant, Know-It-All, Decision Maker, and Micro Manager. Wiseman devotes a separate chapter to each of the five Multiplier leadership roles.

Wiseman cites dozens of real-world examples that suggest how almost any organization (regardless of its size or nature) can plan, implement, accelerate, and sustain a human development program that strengthens participants' leadership and management skills that (a) will enable them to multiply the intelligence and capability of the people around them and (b) avoid behaviors that can diminish people's ability and enthusiasm

As Wiseman clearly realizes, people combine some of the best and worst traits of both the Multiplier and Diminisher. Strengths can become weaknesses or vice versa if carried to an extreme. A Talent Magnet, for example, could be especially effective recognizing and attracting high-potentials and then hoard their talents, exploiting them to her or his advantage. A Micro Manager could be especially alert for significant details that others ignore but deny other people's professional development by refusing to delegate tasks to them. In the healthiest organizations, there are constant efforts to increase (multiply) positive and productive engagement while reducing (diminishing) waste.

In Appendix B, this is one of the FAQs that caught my eye: Are people either Diminishers or Multipliers or are there people in the middle? Here is Wiseman and McKeown's response: "We see the Diminisher-Multiplier model as a continuum with a few people at the extremes and most of us somewhere in between. As people have been introduced to this material, they almost always see some of the Diminisher and some of the Multiplier within themselves. One leader we worked with is illustrative. He was a smart and aware individual who didn't fit the archetype of a Diminisher, and yet when he read the material he could see how he sometimes behaved in a Diminishing manner. While we studied this leadership phenomenon as a contrast, we see the model as a continuum with only a very few people at the polar extremes and the majority of us somewhere in the middle."

Most supervisors need to increase some behaviors (e.g. providing clear explanations of performance expectations and how performance will be measured) and avoid other behaviors (e.g. withholding information others need). The same is true of those whom they supervise. The challenge is to do more of what will add value and less of what diminishes it.

To me, one of the most valuable insights in this book suggests that, especially during the current economic recession/depression/whatever, the total cost of what must be done (in terms of dollars and hours) is probably much less than what would be saved by doing it. According to Wiseman, Multipliers extract so much more from their people that - in effect - they essentially double the workforce at no additional cost. If that isn't doing more with less, I don't know what is.

Simple Ways To Make A Big Change In Your Effectiveness As A Leader

Having been an HR VP and a recruiter for the IT industry and a Fortune 500 company I strongly agree with the concepts presented here. It's a short, easy read and the book is well designed. It does not spend a lot of time on theory despite the credentials of the author and the rigorous research that went into it. Instead it provides examples and "How To" in each chapter.

If you enjoy books like Daniel Goldman's "Emotional Intelligence", Howard Gardener's "Multiple Intelligence", Carol Dweck's "Mindset" and subjects like psychometrics, personality type and temperament you will relate well to this book.

Having said that I think the real value of this book and its main aim is how we can improve ourselves; how each of us can be less of a diminisher and more of a multiplier. You WILL recognize yourself and others in this book.

I have one bit of advice if you plan to read this book - take the test first. It is located at [...]
I have taken a LOT of psychometric tests in my time and this one is very new so its easy to game if you have read the book. Take the test, THEN read the book.

I do plan on implementing what I have learned and the implementation strategy they recommend is not onerous.

Life-changing read. Not just another management/leadership book

I've read dozens of business books and books about leadership; I have many years of experience as a manager and an MBA. But here's the thing... I do my best to get out of seminars on management/leadership classes and I'll do anything to avoid reading one more repetitious and unoriginal book about how to be a better manager or leader. So... how did I get to writing a review about: "Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter"?

I'm lucky enough to work for an employer who decided to get Liz Wiseman and Greg McKeown to give a bunch of their managers an accelerated one-day 'multipliers' talk based on their book (before it was published so I read it a few months later). As I've mentioned before I'm a skeptic. Most of this management stuff is repetitious BS and it's all about the authors/presenters talking about what made them the great managers and leaders that they are today. I didn't have much of a choice about attending and as I listened to Greg and Liz speak about their research and present raw unedited video clips about some of the multipliers they were writing about in their book something changed.

They were offering practical advice about how to be not just a better leader but a better person. What's leadership about? It's not about about being better than everybody else on your team - it's about getting the most out of them. That's what this book is about. The examples are concrete and the advice and techniques are down to earth and useful to everyone from a parent to a C-level executive.

There isn't a day that goes by when something from Multipliers doesn't influence what I do and how I lead. It might be something as simple as thinking before I speak and spending my 'chips' wisely or asking the questions that drive the right behaviour rather than making statements or giving directives. For example, instead of telling your kids that it's time to go bed and that they need to brush their teeth and put their PJs on try asking them what time it is and then follow that up with another question.

One of the exercises we did in the seminar was to pair up to debate a subject and to take turns asking only questions of the other participant. My partner was doing a great job asking questions and he was getting a lot out of me and I was feeling pretty smart and engaged until he slipped up and made a statement. All of a sudden my intelligence shut down and the debate ended.

The book starts with a quote from Bono (of all people) that says it all: "It has been said that after meeting with the great British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, you left feeling he was the smartest person in the world, but after meeting with his rival Benjamin Disraeli, you left thinking you were the smartest person." Who's the multiplier here? Who's the better leader?

This series is beginning to unnerve me. Three out of the first four have a great deal of action and interplay and the last two have been almost compelling. I'm used to White Wolf's novels being slow and detailed, full of the minutia that is invaluable to a game player, but less of a draw to a casual reader. As the dust settles in Constantinople, many of the undead are leaving, heading for old homes or fresh starts. But travel, for vampires is difficult and dangerous. The world is divided up into kingdoms and principalities with rulers of all sorts, and a lone voyager is in danger on all sides. Enter Andreas the Settite, also known as Ankhesenaten who makes his living transporting the deathless to other demesnes, when he isn't pursuing other, even more dangerous agendas.

His immediate problem is that, instead of the five vampires he expected to guide into France, there are eleven. Vampires, even when they travel in boxes, require a large support staff. Those that are not in torpor require even more since the must hunt without drawing too much unwelcome attention. And Andreas has another worry - he must coax a box or vessel containing the withered heart of the heretic Khay'tall of the hands of the undead craftsman with whom it has been entrusted.

As this caravan rumbles across Europe on its three year voyage, one adventure opens up after another, like a nourish Canterbury Tales. Greedy kings, mad pilgrimages of the faithful, and even the peccadilloes of vampire love affairs keep up the story's interest and make all of the characters come to life. Even Andreas has his personal moments as he deals with the problems of having a Frankish Setite, the beautiful Meribah, in his entourage. Will he protect her, will he love her, or will he simply use Meribah and throw her away?

As you can tell, there's more here than in the usual clan novel, and this bodes well for future volumes. Especially if they are all as well written as Setite. Despite being part of a series, this book stands well on its own if you have even a vague idea of the underlying plot.

This book was a gift for my son who is collecting the set which he is reading in order. Not my choice for personal reading so I cannot review the story or writing.

slightly dissapointed

I dunno maybe im just falling into the idea of the sterotypical setite that most camarilla would like everyone to beleive but i was expecting something rather more from this one. I found the setite characters far far to nice but maybe that was the point? they are a clan widely hated across the board, why? cuz they hold beleifs that are alien to most other clans of vampires. Set was actually Caine? hereritics! and well i guess they dont understand them and what they dont understand they try to destroy. I think the whole point of this clan book was to portray them as a rather misrepresented clan that is less monsterous than say the Lasombra or Tzimisce and that they are just merchants and religous zealots. The actual plot i found slow and truging and well not really much happened till the end. In this book one of the main characters Zoe the Ravnos is a rather annoying fledgling and i feel like just hitting her and saying get a grip girl! but i guess thats what whelps are like when they are first embraced.All in all it wasnt a bad book but theres not much plot to it and its just(as the one before was) setting up the sceane for the really good stuff to follow.

LIFE-CHANGING! You do not need to read the entire book to follow the system, but I was so impressed with it that I read the entire thing. I used this in combination with the CD of white noise and had my daughter sleeping through the night the very first night I implemented it (at two months old). I could almost see the relief in her eyes as I followed this system and she was finally able to get the sleep she was desperate for. It has been four years and I STILL play the CD in her room each night. This is my go-to baby shower book and I have purchased it countless times since.

I have read the book many times and even have pages bookmarked that I revisit when I reach a new developmental stage and need advice for my baby. I like that it is not extreme (not attachment parenting but not the fever method either) so it gives balanced advice and doesn't guilt you for using one method over another. It also provides different options rather than preaching one "right" way.

So thankful for this book!

Purchased this book after seeing a video by Dr. Harvey Karp while at the Birthing Center-- his video helped turn our first day with our amazing but screaming-from-the-moment-he-was-born newborn into a time we could enjoy (and feel confident that we could help soothe our poor little guy). This book (read entirely standing while rocking a screaming child who took two hours to rock to sleep and then only slept maybe two hours at time) changed our world- after reading it and following all suggestions, our son was able to sleep for several hours at a time (which means I was able to sleep several hours at a time as well which made everything so much better!). I continued to follow his suggestions through the months and by 8 months old he was successfully sleeping in his own room in a crib, with very very minimal crying, if any when put to bed.

I love quotes and have many written in journals and hundreds in folders, printed large enough to post on my office door. I teach dance in academia (right now) and it can be a challenge to motivate students to risk enough that they learn to live fully. This book provides a wealth of inspirational quotes I will be able to add to my motivational door collage.

I'm not patient enough to read only one/day, so will share a few of my favorites from the book. Today the ones that stop me as I browse the book are the ones about continuing in the face of adversity: especially day 28: "Fall seven times and stand up eight." ~Japanese Proverb. Also all of General George Patton's seem relevant to my life right now.

Getting back up, sharing what motivates and inspires me, leading by example - this is how I live my life and I'm writing this review because it seems that this is what author Kevin Kruse does also. I will enjoy this book for many years to come. If you're reading this review I'll assume it's because you're interested in buying this book - I encourage you to do so. I don't think it's possible to have too much inspiration!

Fodder for Reflection

This book is full of fodder for reflection. For some my response was, "Yes, yes!" for others it was, "Huh! I never thought of it that way before." Being a book of quotes on leadership the connection of many of the quotes was obvious, but for others the connection was more subtle. You had to think about it some, and that is what made those powerful. These quotes are the kind you want to copy onto a sticky note and leave on your computer monitor for a week, so you can spend time chewing on it.

Looking forward to my best year ever...

I am an entrepreneur and educator, and now in my mid-60s I have been working on a couple of projects that will be challenging to bring to fruition. It is important to me, more than ever, for my work to have meaning and make a difference, even if it is in a small way to only a few. I have been asking myself how I can remain inspired and motivated as I push through on these projects. Some of the quotes and authors are familiar to me, and some are new—a great mix of familiar and unfamiliar. The activities at the end of the book are also useful tools and reminders to me that I can step back and reflect on what I am dreaming, thinking and doing, and exercise the option to change or modify my course. Briefer, but not more concise...

I own every single edition of Clinical Ocular Pharmacology. The first edition of this work did an excellent job in pointing out basic pharmaceutical priniciples to start the work off. The second edtion did this to a lesser extent and subsequent edtions ignored them all together.

Editons three and beyond DID gradually expand specific Ocular treatment plans and disease descriptions more and more.

Then this edtion came along.

Certain drugs, which had been discussed in every single prior edtion were not even mentioned, and the treatment given to diseases and pharmaceuticals alike was abbreviatd.

This was the first edition which in at least some way did not surpass it's predecessor.

An overpriced dissappointment.
