Chinese: A Comprehensive Grammar

This is a very comprehensive book, with many well-explained examples. The book makes full use of simplified chinese characters (as used on the Chinese mainland), pinyin, and in some cases literal translations, as well as full english translations.
Key language concepts are well explained, and emphasis is placed on features which may pose an extra challenge to the learner of chinese as a foreign language.
This book treats the language from a fairly academic point of view. Thus it is excellent for those wishing to attain a deep understanding of the language, rather than to learn a few superficial phrases as is too often the case with travellers' phrase books.
However, this book 'is intended for readers who have some knowledge of the (chinese) language and are at ease with its written form'. This is certainly the case, as the book employs a wide range of complex vocabulary right from the outset. Thus, not for beginners.
Overall, an excellent reference book for those who already have at least a basic knowledge of chinese. Not recommended for beginners, but a separate book by the same authors entitled 'Basic Chinese' is a superb book for those new to chinese.

A great grammar - n.b. a few errors

This is a grammar most deserving of its title. It is truly comprehensive in every sense of the word. The grammar is explained along lines that a Westerner with even a pinch of grammatical knowledge can understand.

It is probably a good idea that the examples of erroneous grammar are included, complete with an asterisk to indicate that it is an error. However, I can't help feeling that they'll remain in my memory and I won't be able to tell the difference between a sentence that's been hailed as a grammatically correct example and one that is incorrect. I can't really think of any alternatives to the way the authors have done this though.

It would be great if there were just a few exercises at the end of each chapter, complete with an answer key. That really wouldn't add all that much to the total page count of the book, but would greatly add to its overall usefulness. After all, most of us who actually buy/read this book are students of Chinese who need all the exercises we can get - aren't we?

Lastly, here are a few errors I found in this book:

In the index, on page 417 xiang3 points to a non-existent 8.1.6. It should be 18.1.6 (page 284).

ning4ke3 and ning4yuan4 (section 22.3.8, page 342) should have exactly the tones which I have indicated. In error, this book introduces both words with the correct tones, and then proceeds to give examples with the wrong tones.

Duo1 is confused with dou1 twice on page 181.

The index has an entry "causative sentences - 20.1". There are no causative sentences at 20.1.

I'm not sure whether the below should be classified as errors or shortcomings:

On page 46, section 2.14 should be cross referenced to chapter 7.

Hai2shi0 (or) is explained in section 23.4. But there's no reference made to huo4zhe3 at all, which is exceedingly relevant.

Very thorough

I am a high school student in his fourth year of Chinese learning. My teacher is Chinese, and is not the most proficient English speaker in the world, which occasionally leaves my grammatical questions hanging. I purchased this book to solve that problem. I will say that it is rather expensive, but I believe that it was well worth it.

It seems as though the diction the author uses in the main text is geared towards more advanced speakers of English, ones who are familiar with in-depth grammatical terms. I've tried explaining the more complicated aspects of Chinese grammar to my classmates - who have been studying just as long as I have - using the most accurate grammatical terms as in the writing of this textbook, and I receive blank stares in return. It is likely, based upon my experience, that the average high school student (and maybe also a good number of college ones, as well) will not easily understand the information in this book. The type of student who will get the most out of this book is the one who studies grammar in his free time.

As for the content of the book, it is organized logically and clearly. There is a detailed table of contents to help in finding exactly what needs to be found. Note: another reviewer has pointed out that there may be some cross-referencing issues, etc. in it, and I have noticed these, but I haven't found any mistakes which make the content difficult to understand (beside the fact that some of the content is difficult to understand in the first place). There are a few inconsistencies in the labeling of the pinyin which I've noticed, but they are few and far between, generally speaking.

It details out the different sentence types - expository, narrative, declarative, imperative, interrogatory, and so on - and all of the ways in which these sentences can be constructed in Chinese. It also examines the attributive and predicative structures of adjectives, which seems to be one of the most important aspects of the language, and makes it very clear how they are used in sentences. Furthermore, throughout the text, information for formality and style for written Chinese is included.

Though I have studied four years, I am obviously not fluent; the reason I like this book so much is because it consolidates the foundation of the grammar which I have learned previously and contains enough information to help me continue my growth.

This book is one of the most factual ones. I'd strongly advice everyone to read. At least those who want to know the truth on Gujarat riots. Shocked to know how the facts, which are with strong documentation but not mentioned by the mainstream media! The truth of Teesta Setalvad, Zakia Jafri complaint is well explained. This book proves be a very interesting read with the finest part being the chapter on SIT. It is almost an encyclopedia on the 2002 riots! Solid facts, comprehensive documentation! One of the best books I have ever read, and certainly the best on this subject. Happy to rate it as 5 stars.

About the Author

Owen Anderson, PhD, has been a regular contributor to Runner’s World, Shape, Men’s Health, Peak Performance, National Geographic Adventure, and Sports Injury Bulletin. He has written extensively on the topics of running training, strength training for running, sports nutrition, and injury prevention, and he developed the neural system of training, which diminishes the emphasis on mileage and promotes the use of high-quality running and the progression of running-specific strength training to achieve optimal running fitness.

Anderson is the founder of Lansing Sports Management, which coaches elite athletes from Kenya and manages their international competitions. He has enjoyed a successful career coaching runners of all levels, including notables such as Benjamin Simatei, the winner of the Park Forest 10-mile race in Chicago, Illinois, and Chemtai Rionotukei, who in 2012 and 2013 has six victories, two course records, and 14 top-four finishes in U.S. road races, including a win at the 2013 Fifth Third River Bank 25K.

Anderson is the race director of the annual Lansing Marathon, Lansing Half Marathon, and Ekiden Relay. In addition, he hosts running camps throughout the U.S., including the Lansing Marathon Running Camp in Thetford Center, Vermont. Anderson is also the CEO of Lansing Moves the World, a nonprofit foundation that coordinates three projects, including an after school program for Lansing children age 9 to 14, a tree planting program in east Africa, and a program for families and children victimized by the recent violence in the Tana River Delta district of Kenya.

Anderson was awarded a National Science Foundation fellowship and completed his PhD at Michigan State University.

Good scientific news to consider in developing your training plan

Lots of good research cited to back training theory purposed. However, the author omits defending the rational behind doing some easy runs. In fact, he attacks easy running as being non-productive to improving racing ability. (unless you are an ultra-marathoner). Also, the risk of becoming injured by following the high intensity training program espoused by the author was not adequately addressed. He does offer some strengthening exercises to help prevent injury, but studies showing their actual effectiveness haven't been done yet. I would be cautious in applying such high relative volumes of high intensity training. For example, the author recommends building to where you do 25% of your weekly mileage at vVO2max pace (roughly the pace you can sustain for a 6-minute race). Plus, he advocates doing addition work at your maximal speed (all-out sprinting). I question whether most individuals could handle such stress successfully for many weeks or seasons, let alone for a lifetime of running and racing. As a coach and competitive runner of many years, I will seek to cautiously interweave some of the principles the author teaches into the workouts I write and follow, but will not ignore the value of easy running in doing so. But overall, this is a best current resource available for learning the science behind training distance runners.

Good stuff..; For the most part...

I've been holding off on a review for this book. There are some solid parts and some points he leaves out... This is a long one. I think science is both to the benefit and detriment to endurance training.

I agree wholeheartedly with most of his statements in the short term, but have a few serious misgivings about the book and the benefit of science over experience when it comes to developing yourself as a runner in the long term. He does hit on one of the key points in developing an integrated approach to running, which is pure genius and should be integrated by everyone!!!

Pros first:

1) I've always liked Dr. Anderson's style of writing. He's a blast to read and he makes the studies (of which my geeky self has read quite a few) lively instead of the dry, academic tones of the original. I have three of his barely published books in PDF format (lactate lift off, how do I become a better runner and great workouts), so many of the chapters in this book are repeats of what he wrote in those. It's good stuff, regardless, so it is forgiven.

2) The studies he cites are relevant. They make up a large part of the great studies over the past years in the lexicon of endurance study. They teach much. Normally, exercise physiology studies manage to confirm what runners/coaches have been doing for years, but there is now a shift for studies to recommend rather than confirm.

3) The guidance of the chapters and their organization are key. The order is good, but kind of ancillary to the sequence within the chapters.

4) The genius: I love his idea of integrating strength and endurance training is genius. It's a path I've pursued for years, and his addition is yet another way of doing it. It's genius. The addition of strength training is becoming a well established component to good performance. However, it's really hard to get around what you should be doing strength-wise to match with the endurance of that day. You want it to complement, ie you can't do a long run and heavy explosive work in the same session. I am an anal retentive guy, so I don't necessarily like his exercise choices, but that can be worked out!!

5) Sprint Training: This is yet another thing that has been minimalized in endurance. However, at it's core running is a power sport. You have your maximum achievable speed, and then you train to hold a higher percentage of it over longer distances. There are all kinds of benefits to sprint training - far beyond a kick - and Dr. Anderson hits them all.

Cons:

1) My main beef with this is the minimalized volume. This is where science fails. The studies he cites (Costill, etc) show no improvement in VO2 when runners go above 70mpw. In one of the barely published books he goes to Bill Bowerman for a similar statement. Well, there are attributes other than VO2 that are related to mileage. Dr. Joe Vigil (maybe the best coach in the world) draws a correlation between mileage and economy of running. The studies that draw distinctions between the values of intensity and volume usually have runners/endurance athletes going at totally polar paces/efforts. In a scientific study, you should only have one variable that changes. Studies cited by strength and conditioning folks will have a group exercising at 70% of VO2 and another group doing hard intervals. Well, of course the interval group is going to show greater improvement even though they are exercising 1/5 of the time!! Basic logic, folks. One the author cites has runners going at 4 x 30 minutes at threshold every week. The other group does 4 interval sessions a week. The show similar results, but the value accord to thte author is the time invested. I'd be interested to see what happens if you mixed the components...

2) There's a reason it takes 10 years to develop into an elite runner or meet your potential in longer endurance events. The shortcomings of scientific studies are they last 4-12 weeks in length. The studies point to keys, but they can't get past the idea of long term development. Tony Benson and Irv Ray, in their book Run with the Best (which I believe is going for ~$4200 at the moment) have a chart that links accumulated mileage to peak performance over various distances. This is a case where they look to the last 100 years, analyze the number of years and training methods of athletes and come to their conclusions. It can't be studied in a lab (you try to find a lab rat willing to do a 15 year study on this) but anecdotal evidence is dead on.

3) I think experience should guide in development. You can't discount 100+ years of learning from training mistakes and training success based on a 6 week lab study. Experience shows that training at the maximum volume you can handle while still being able to perform the intense sessions will lead to the best development.

I call this progressive periodization. Limits in volume tend to be seasonal. Your volume should climb from cycle to cycle, but also measure the percent of your training that is intense. This should edge up gradually as the season progresses as well as year to year. I really think it's not training volume or hard day intensity that kills, it's the inability to run at a recovery pace or to take the day off to recover if any run is not a recovery run!!

The Lydiard model is constantly misunderstood. Under no condition would Lydiard get away from intensity - tempo runs, sprint drills and fartlek were part of the base period. The shotgun model (as I call it) of trying to incorporate all components in one week has value, but once again there has to be progression in terms of the intensity of the sessions, volume of the cycle and emphasis of the components within the week. They can work, regardless of Dr. Anderson's statements.

I think Dr. Anderson hits the nail on the head where he goes for progression from week to week, etc, within his model. This is nothing new - not even remotely so. Once again, to link it to progressive strength training is where the genius lies.

So, there is a lot of good in this book. There are some serious limitations to lab studies. This is in part to their limits in time. To totally eschew 100+ years of training experience is none too bright, so there needs to be a consolidation of both. Read this, but don't totally drop everything you've been taught/learned over the years. There are some really important ideas here, but once again, don't take this as the sole book on training!!

Why Speed Matters

Running Science cites scientific studies of different training techniques to dispel some widely held misconceptions about the kinds of training that contribute most effectively to better performance in middle distance and distance events. This book makes a compelling case for training programs built around high quality workouts performed at anaerobic threshold pace (or faster) instead of programs that emphasize high mileage at slow-to-moderate paces. It also explains why improving maximum sprinting speed and muscular strength are important factors for success in events from 800 meters on up.

In addition to the impressive scientific content, Running Science provides useful training schedules for middle distance and distance events that incorporate the theoretical into a practical approach for success. Based on my own experiences as a competitive runner and coaching techniques I have used to train my two sons (who are accomplished runners in USATF youth competitions), this speed-based approach to distance training also resonates with my personal experience.

Although there is some repetitive material here and certain passages in which the science may run a bit deeper than necessary, the book is well organized, allowing readers to focus on those sections of greatest interest and relevance to their training. All in all, I consider this book a must-have resource for any serious distance runner's library.

Witty and brilliant with tremendous heart...A must read

I came across Ofili's work first through his cartoons on facebook. They were always apt, captured the essence of everyday life in a very simplistic, knock you over the head way. His book, "How Stupidity Saved my Life" is moving, witty, sad, encouraging, uplifting and laugh out loud funny. He encourages all of us to cast aside our fears and reach beyond what we have been told is out of our reach. Who dares to dream? or take a step towards that dream? That person succeeds. This book is a must read for all those who are struggling with fear, rejection, a dream they have been told was unrealistic. Basically it is a book for all of mankind. READ IT!

Prof. Dr-Ing. Paul Kohlenbach is a professor at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences Berlin, Germany. SHELEMYAHU ZACKS, PhD, is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Binghamton University. He has published several books and more than 170 journal articles on the design and analysis of experiments, statistical control of stochastic processes, statistical decision theory, sequential analysis, reliability, statistical methods in logistics, and sampling from finite populations. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, Dr. Zacks is the author of Stage-Wise Adaptive Designs, also published by Wiley.

For a Limited Audience

I think that the vast majority of the people who end up buying this are probably not going to even really be asking whether they should, because it'll be something that was assigned as part of a course. It's very heavy on examples and calculations, which is good for the fact that it provides plenty of practice.

It's at a high enough level, though, that the number of people who'd be studying this kind of thing on their own is very very small. It does seem like it was written with the assumption that there'd be a professor involved who'd probably walk you through some of the gaps. I could definitely also see someone buying it as a supplementary book for a class in the topic, to get a lot more practice questions in case you're struggling and want to make sure you have the subject really nailed down.

If you're just looking for something to teach you about statistics, on the other hand, this is not what you're looking for. When I looked at the description initially I was thinking it meant something more at an undergrad level, but this is definitely intended to be somewhere around advanced undergrad to grad school.

Good High Level Review of Math Stats with Emphasis on Examples and Problems

I liked this book a lot in that it lays out what would be covered in a year-long graduate mathematical statistics course over about 600 pages and 9 chapters, and covers most basic results that one would see in this type of course. What I likes a lot about the book is that after laying out theory (probably about 1/2 of the test), each chapter than has worked out examples, along with problems to which solutions are presented. This is not an easy book and certainly requires good mathematical and statistical training. It could certainly be used as a text; the examples and problems are well chosen and solutions are well presented. For me (a PhD in economics), the book is a good reference as I read statistical work (index is good) - I find looking at a problem (and solution) as a useful way to make sure I understand the material. and problems are useful to make sure I understand the material.

A very good book, but necessarily pretty difficult going given its content. Recommended as a reference and possible text (or study companion).

Excellent Textbook for Advanced Mathematical Statistics Course

This book is a textbook that is geared toward use in upper-level courses in advanced mathematical statistics. It covers basic probability theory, statistical distributions, sufficient statistics and the information in samples, testing statistical hypotheses, statistical estimation, confidence and tolerance intervals, large sample theory for estimation and testing, Bayesian analysis in testing and estimation, and advanced topics in estimation theory.

The description on the cover indicates that this book “[p]rovides the necessary skills to solve problems in mathematical statistics” and that it is a “clear … approach to the fundamentals of statistical theory.” This led me initially to think that it was an entry-level treatise on practical aspects of statistics that would help me in my research and evaluation work.

In over 600 pages of complicated equations and higher level mathematics, the author provides proofs and examples of numerous statistical theories. A highly skilled and adept mathematician would undoubtedly find the information of great interest in strengthening their knowledge of mathematical statistics.

The author is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Binghamton (New York) University. His accomplishments in the fields of statistics and probability are numerous, including several books and over 170 journal articles on the design and analysis of experiments. As such, he is clearly a foremost expert in the field.

At over $100, the book is not inexpensive, and the average statistics user is unlikely to find much of practical application therein. A more basic approach would be Methods of Mathematics Applied to Calculus, Probability, and Statistics (Dover Books on Mathematics) by R. W. Hamming. Although Hamming’s work currently appears in a 1985 edition, readers have consistently given it high marks for its clarity and utility, and as of this writing it is still available from Amazon.

I suspect that Zacks’s book will reach only a very limited audience, primarily very accomplished mathematicians. It is definitely not basic or fundamental, except in the most restricted senses of these terms.

This book makes a great gift for the holidays. I have mine on my coffee table so that guests that are waiting have something interesting to read. Surely you have heard of some of the quotations, but there is at least one that you haven't heard of that is insightful.

The book also explains who said it and what the significance of the quote is.

About the Author
Elizabeth Barrette works in the Pagan and speculative fiction fields as a writer, editor, and scholar. She currently serves as the managing editor of PanGaia magazine and the dean of studies at the Grey School of Wizardry. In 2003, Barrette won the Poet Laureate Competition at Sol Magazine. In 2005, her poem "The Poltergeist of Polaris" earned a nomination for the Rhysling Award. She has written for The Beltane Papers, CIRCLE Magazine, Green Egg, SageWoman, and many of the Llewellyn annuals. Barrette lives in Charleston, Illinois, and enjoys giving presentations at events in the Midwest region.

Sharpen your pencils!

This is the first book I have had the pleasure to read which really gets into the nitty-gritty of putting words to paper for ritual and ceremonial uses.

As a children's book writer, I have read my fair share of writing manuals, including books on poetic forms. Many of them left me scratching my head and wondering if I had any grasp on the English language at all or if I should just throw in the towel and let someone with a Masters degree in English Lit have all the fun.

Ms. Barrette's book wasn't one of these. Her descriptions of the differing forms of poetry and prose was accessible to anyone in plain, sraight-forward description. Each form was demonstrated by an example, many of which were the author's own creations, as well as examples from more famous authors' writings. What I especially liked was the inclusion of the historic and cultural explanations of each form of writing. The author also commented on how the form could best be used in a Pagan setting.

Each chapter examines a particular topic or form of writing, followed by a series of exercises meant to encourage the reader to use the knowledge from the chapter in a constructive and practical manner. Each chapter builds on the ones previous, with the suggestion to return to earlier exercises with the newly acquired information.

The final chapters in the book encourage the writer who wishes to become published with practical and down-to-earth advice on this tough but rewarding occupation.

The book contains footnotes, a bibliography and an index. At less than 300 pages, the book is small, but jam packed with tons of useful advice and examples for the person who wants to create truly magical ritual form.

Magically Delicious

For most of us, when we first start getting into our magical or spiritual path, we recite the words of others with more experience. 'The Lord's Prayer' and 'The Charge of the Goddess' are two very good examples. However, as we progress into our traditions, we want to make them more personal to us, we want to start writing our own prayers and our own ceremonies.

_Composing Magic_ by Elizabeth Barrette takes us by the hand, and leads us down that road.

In this book we find delightful examples of how -- and how 'not' -- to compose magical verse and prose to achieve desired results.

It is not a grimoire.
It is not a book of spells.
It is not a 'cookbook' of recipes.

_Composing Magic_ is a guidebook of how we decide where we are on our journey, what we wish to achieve in that journey, and how to put together our own rituals, blessings, chants, prayers, and incantations to achieve desired results.

Well done Ms Barrette for filling this much needed gap!
