About the Author
Claude Oestges is Associate Professor with the Institute for Information and Communication Technologies, Electronics and Applied Mathematics (Universit� catholique de Louvain). His research interests cover wireless and satellite communications, with a specific focus on channel characterization and modeling. He is the author or co-author of two books and more than 170 scientific papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

Comprehensive review of MIMO technology - not for the beginner

It is not clear from the book description, but this book is certainly not for the beginner in the field of MIMO. It assumes a strong background in DSP, mathematics, and basic understanding of MIMO. In other words, this is an industry book for experts. The book does a great job of covering the basics of MIMO, delving into the advantages of the encoding technique and its evolution over the years. Common MIMO measurements and challenges are discussed thoroughly, and one seeking additional enlightenment can find a huge index of papers and books to which he can refer for further information.

The authors also discuss very specific implementation challenges in addition to the theory, including 802.11N, LTE, and WiMax.

If you are in the industry and want a single book with just about everything you need to know on today's challenges in WiMax, I highly recommend this book. If you are just curious or new, you might want to look elsewhere.

Written for practitioners, this is a very comprehensive reference guide that aims to addresses the fundamental MIMO architecture in a very reasonable 320 pages. Too often authors (esp. when there are multiple) seem to write like they are paid by the word resulting in excessively elongated chapters. MIMO: From Theory to Implementation doesn't not fall into this trap. The text is clean and easy to read but will be relegated to a very focused audience. The diagrams, acronym guide, index are all top notch and overall the book is recommended for experts in this field.

A Fine Summary

MIMO (multiple input/multiple output) refers to the increasingly commonly used architecture of multiple transmitters and receivers, with multiple antennas, for both local and wide area networks to increase system performance. This book offers a self contained and reasonably complete and coherent summary of the algorithms, standards and protocols employed in the most modern configurations. It will certainly prove very useful to engineers working in the field and will also provide the mathematically more sophisticated reader with the necessary introduction to the terms and techniques employed by current practitioners.

Because the chapters are written by various authors, the book reads more like a compendium of independent papers than a coherent monograph and lacks the consistency that one would have derived from a common author or more aggressive editing. (This is not the Bourbaki series.) Ideally, one would have introduced the topic as a unified combination of information theory, constrained optimisation, geometry and electromagnetic propagation before dealing with the engineering aspects of coding, mulitiplexing and beamforming. However, mathematicians do not write books on such topics and one must accept what is available.

Despite this slight criticism, this text does offer a fine summary of the field and is recommended to those who wish to work in it.
