Heavens Above!
By Grady Harp
ASTRONOMY FOR DUMMIES is not the usual 'for dummies' type book. This very well written book by Dr. Stephen P. Maran, a retired Assistant Director of Space Sciences for Information and Outreach at NASA thinks well, communicates effectively and while exploring all aspects of the science of Astronomy conveys to the reader a sense of awe and appreciation for the complete history of Astronomy and its function in our current exploration of space.

In a very concise way he takes the reader into the pleasure of observing the night skies, showing the constellation and how they are related (and named!), explains some of those terms that seem rather foreign to many, terms such as 'black holes', Big Bang theory, quasars, asteroids, extraterrestrial intelligence, and then takes the reader on a guided tour of the universe - suns, solar systems, planets, stars - in a manner that is as educational as it is experiential. The book is generously illustrated with diagrams and in the middle of the book is a panorama of gorgeous color photographs of the various planets and their accoutrements, including photos from the Hubble Space Telescope of planetary nebulae and one of two galaxies caught in cosmic collision.

This is a fascinating book to read and one that will become a frequent reference manual when sharing the spaciousness of the night skies with those your love. Grady Harp, November 12

I just finished this book and I like it.

PROS:
* Packed with useful information
* Easy to read
* Designed with the novice in mind
* Detailed table of Contents
* Equally good index
* Easy to read writing style
* Comprehensive
* There's something in there for everyone.

CONS:
* Not many pictures, This is a drawback for an astronomy text
* Most of the pictures it does have are in black and white
* Perhaps a tad bit overly optimistic (That is observing some of these objects might be more difficult than the text leads the reader to believe)
* It touches on many things, but doesn't take the time to dig very deeply into most of them

CONCLUSION:
Just as the title implies, this is a nice, easy to read text for the novice. It is also a useful reference book for more experienced observers. This is because one can quickly find a couple of paragraphs on nearly any astronomical topic. I don't think I would choose this book if I wanted a field manual for observing.

A first-rate introduction to astronomy
By Metallurgist
Do you know - what an astronomical unit is, the names of many star constellations, or about different types of telescopes? These are just a few of the things covered in the first 60 pages of this book. Subsequent pages go on to things like the planets of our solar system and then to the stars of the universe. Still further on the book covers very modern topics such as black holes, dark matter and dark energy. All this is done in a very clear and introductory manner. The focus of the book is on basic astronomy, not on astrophysics, so it contains no mathematics, and black holes, dark matter and dark energy are discussed in a very basic and general manner. The book is not a color picture book - it contains only 20 color photographs. However, the book does provide the basics of astronomy in a very clear text, augmented with tables and some star charts. I think it is a very good book for a high school student or for an introductory college course. While not oriented towards them, more advanced students may also find some useful information in this book.

This book is divided into six parts:
1) Stalking the Cosmos - This is a basic section describing astronomy, basic tools and sky watching in general.
2) Going Once Around the Solar System - This section contains chapters that discuss the earth, moon, the planets and their moons, and other solar system features such as asteroids and Kuiper Belt objects.
3) Meeting Old Sol and Other Stars - The chapters in this part of the book deal with our sun and other stars. It includes discussion of different types of stars and discussions of galaxies, black holes and quasars.
4) Pondering the Remarkable Universe - This section discusses the question of the possibility of other life in the Universe and a bit of cosmology. It discusses the "Big Bang" and the microwave radiation measurements that have been used to support this model. This part of the book also very briefly discusses dark matter and dark energy.
5) The Part of Tens - Like many of the books in this series, this one contains lists of ten facts, such as "You Have Tiny Meteorites in Your Hair", and ten common errors, such as "Summer Always Comes When the Earth is Closest to the Earth".
6) Appendices - There is an appendix of 8 star maps and an appendix containing a Glossary of terms. The book also has an index. There is no bibliography at the end of the book, but there are references distributed throughout, including many interesting Internet sites.
